We stayed at Newport House in May 2006 having been there two years previously. It has the refined elegance that many places in Ireland aspire to and never achieve. The service is personal and pleasant. The surroundings are extremely refined. You can imagine what Yeats felt like staying in Lissadell House further up the coast back in the 1930's.

DInner is a fabulous experience, the food is so fresh and tasty. The wine list makes you want to drink for a week. Breakfast is probably the best bit - porridge is beautiful and the fresh eggs and sausages are divine.

Newport house is removed enough from Westport to allow you to enjoy the peace but still close enough to let you see all the sights around clew bay.

Our two nights at Newport House were heavenly. The manor house is very homey and comfortable, you feel like you can put your feet up, curl up with a book, or take a nap as needed. Everyone there seemed to be going fly fishing and having a wonderful experience, we were the only non fisherpeople. It was a very nice, lively group of guests, and I believe we were the only Americans in residence. The staff is so attentive, and provided some of the best personalized service we've experienced. Our room was in the front of the house, very large and comfortable. Fantastic bathroom, great water pressure. The grand staircase is just that, quite grand. The river in front of the manor house is tidal, you will get to see it come and go, fascinating. It is really out in the country and so relaxing, lovely wooded grounds. The meals were outstanding. The dinner menu changes nightly according to the freshest ingredients available. The wine list is extensive. We enjoyed a day trip to Westport and visited Westport House, don't miss that. Turn down service was provided at night, a nice touch. If we went up there again, I would definitely book fishing lessons through Newport House and go out for the experience.

Newport House Hotel is simply the most elegant small hotel I have ever stayed in. I was there two days. It is a converted mansion in a parklike setting on the river close to the town centre of Newport, Co. Mayo. Small hotel , 18-20 rooms. Public rooms furnished with lovely antiques and fly fishing mementos. Bedrooms are lovely, comfortable and well furnished, The staff seem to be long term employees. Service is terrific with staff friendly and not obsequious.
Food is absolutely wonderful. I hesitated at the 58 Euro price for the fixed price dinner but it was well worth it. Probably the best two dinners I have ever had. Superb seafood courses and filet mignon. Cheese course was a tray with 12 Irish cheeses and home baked crackers. Everything is made in house including 3 flavors of superb ice cream. Coffe served in lounge accompanied by a dish with several home made truffles and chocolates.
CAVEAT! When making reservations do not confuse Newport House Hotel with the Newport Hotel. One block away by foot and miles away in quality
I am attaching photos of the hotel and the view towards the river from the front lawn

This is absolutely how a country house hotel should be, but rarely is - fabulous service, friendly but not overly so; superb food; fantastic rooms & lovely location.
