My wife and I stayed in Ghan House in August to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We are regular visitors to properties in Ireland's Blue Book and Hidden Ireland and are rarely disappointed. In fact this is the first time I have felt compelled to complain on Trip Advisor.
Despite warnings from friends who stayed last year and inconsistent reports on Trip Advisor we decided to go and find out for ourselves, hoping that we would have a great time. Our experience was so disappointing. Our room was in the Annex and in truth was of a standard no better than a youth hostel. Wooden DIY bunk beds in the corner, pokey and paper thin walls. We could actually hear the occupants in the next room going to the toilet. The restaurant staff were very attentive and friendly but the food was just ok. It was clear that the roast potatoes had been refried as they were very tough. I don't want to be picky or affect the owners business but it did cost euro 285 for the 2 of us. When asked by the owner if we had enjoyed our stay I answered honestly and told him that our room was very disappointing. I didn't receive an apology and he had clearly heard it all before.
So if you are thinking of staying check if you are getting the room nearest to the door in the Annex and if this is the room on offer don't even think about it. I would imagine that if we had stayed in the main house our experience would have been completely different. The setting is fabulous and the old house is great but the annex is terrible.

Room Tip: Stay in the main house - avoid the Annex

To be fair, we had stayed in Ghan House in March 2011 and loved the place. It has such an atmosphere and old world feel we knew that we wanted to have our wedding there - and we did in Early september and it was brilliant. They couldn't have done enough for us. We were greated by Paul at the door who made sure everything was in order and ok during the night. We had a drinks reception in the main hall with a quartet of violens playing in another room and the atmosphere was fantastic. We had our main dinner in the upstairs restaurent with a buffet served in the lower ballroom. We had the whole house and all the rooms with five tables set out in the main restaurent at the front.

We had booked the whole house to ourselves which we would advise any other couple to do as it just means you have the place to yourself all night and can do what you want. Later on we had dancing in the ballroom with music playing from an iPod and four of the staff stayed on until early in the morning to man the bar etc. Next morning we had a lovely breakfast and were not forced or pressured into leaving at any particular time.

Loved it and want to go back very soon. Ghan House is THE perfect wedding venue. If you are seriously contemplating it, go for it. You won't regret it. The venue, the location, the staff and service are all second to none.

We recently got married in Ghan House and I honestly could not fault the place.

They done so much to help make our day truly memorable on the 4th August.
Everything down to the table settings, the food, the rooms, the drink, the service I could go on all day.
It really was a very special day and a lot of it was down to all the staff there in Ghan House.
They are a credit to the House.

I spent a few night here for my sisters wedding and had a lovely experience. The staff were friendly and went above and beyond to make sure every body was happy. The room was spacious and comfortable with beautiful views of the surrounding hills. With everything just a few minute walks away (including some fantastic pubs) i would recomend Ghan house to anyone who enjoys good food, a warm welcome and comfy beds!

A gem of a place. Beautiful setting on Carlingford Louch. Lovely period Hotel with original features and sympathetic decor but all mod cons incorporated. The staff were so friendly, helpful & accommodating. The food was glorious, no surprise as it runs cookery school days & mini breaks ( a pity it's so far from home as the cookery lessons on offer looked great.) They grow their own herbs & many of the vegetables, so everything is fresh. The wedding food was truly scrumptious. If you're thinking of going to Ireland you should include this in your itinary. Sweet village just a couple of minutes walk from hotel & lots of local history. Wonderful views of the Mourne mountains & lots of walking if you want to burn off the calories of the lovely food!
