Mc Kevitt's Village Hotel
Ranked #5 of 13 Carlingford B&B and Inns

Avoid this place at all costs. There has to be better! The bad points were:

- problems booking. Sent them a cheque for full payment in advance. Received a call about 3 weeks later to say that our booking was being cancelled because we hadnt paid (even though they had cashed our cheque!) This was the result of confusion on hotel's part (dont ask me how that arose) but was cleared up via phone. Warning bells flashing though!
- the room we were checked into on arrival hadnt been touched since the last "residents" checked out. Had to wait in the bar while they cleaned it for us.
- no hot water at night. Called reception to ask for hot water but they said the person who sorts the boiler had gone home and so they couldnt do anything about it!
- very very rude waitress. I've never seen anything like it before and hopefully never will again. At dinner, service from this person was abrupt and rude. We were told to hurry up with our orders as they closed the restaurant at XXXpm and she had to get home! But the next morning at breakfast was like a scene out of fawlty towers.
Aggressively hollering over tables "what did you order" and practically throwing the breakfast at them. People were actually afraid to ask for anything or say they'd been given the wrong plate as she was so rude.

OK points
- Room was clean (when we asked for it to be sorted), albeit basic. but for the number of stars it has it was fine.
- the bar is fine. Bit too many hen parties but I guess that's where they get a lot of their custom.

And finally, vastly overpriced. Although the rooms themselves are ok, the service is terrible. Mediocre food, no hot water, rude staff. Would avoid this place at all costs next time.

Having read the reveiws of this Hotel we were a little wary of our stay, however having stayed there we found the staff to be extremely friendly and good fun, the food was very good, both lunch and dinner, this was quite ovbious by the amount of people eating there. The toilets were spotless and the Bar and restaurant very clean. The disco was full and we met alot of the locals there, all very friendly. We were offered a late drink afterwards in the residents bar and had great fun.We just wonder what people expect in Ireland, people should just chill out and relax a little, places like Carlingford are more relaxed than major cities and you have to go with the flow. Yes upstairs was a bit dated, but its a 2 star hotel, just what are these people looking for? Beats us.

Carlingford is beautiful, it's a shame that Mr. McKevitt can ruin a visit to such a fabulous part of Ireland. He was very rude. We wished to return to the hotel at night and were told that we had to go through the main door, with the throngs of people going to the appauling 'disco'. When we questioned him about this later inside, yet again he was rude. No hot water the next morning in the shower. The breakfast was very good, and we would like to compliment the female member of staff who served us breakfast and checked us out of our rooms, as she was extremely nice and courtious. She appeared to be a local resident, which thankfully redeemed our opinion that not everyone is like the owner. A member of our party had been married at this hotel a few years previous and felt very disappointed about our treatment by the owner.

My sister had booked in to stay for 2 nights in McKevitts. On the second day someone rang from the hotel and told her they had packed up her bags and checked her out as she was only booked in for one night. She told him she'd booked in for two nights but was told it was not their problem and to come and get her stuff.
They never once tried to contact her before this or offered her any alternative accommodation. Although, having read through the other reviews about this hotel, I see that this has happened before to other people.
I would not recommend this hotel to anyone.

We just spent 3 days at McKevitts Village Hotel. We found it overpriced but everything in Great Britain seemed overpriced to us! Our room was relatively clean - it didn't smell like a pub but the shower had some grunge. The service was very friendly, the food good.
Problems were: the light just outside our window - we had daylight most of the night. The curtains - although a lovely white material - didn't keep the light out. And the noise from everywhere - the corridor, the pub and especially the smokers who now have to smoke outside and did so just below our window. There didn't seem to be any sound-proofing at all.
The beauty of Carlingford and the hill walking helped us get to sleep at night but NOT a place for fitful sleepers.

We checked into this hotel for 2 nights and we were given a key to a room in a house accross the road. We were told these rooms were bigger rooms and were newly decorated so that was the advantage. Yes the room was big but it was decorated with the cheapest furniture. The curtains were cheap and not lined so our room was bright from 08.00 in the morning. The carpet was filthy and the tv had only one station. We asked for breakfast in bed and were told to ring over in the morning but there was no phones in the room. Anyway it wouldn't of worked as by the time they brought it accross the road,it would of been freezing.
What annoyed me most was the price. If it had been cheap I wouldn't complain. But we paid 130 per night and we were in a house accross the road. It was such a rip off and I would rather camp on the side of the road that stay somewhere like that again.

I stayed at this "hotel" for one night. For 120 euros per room per night, it was a total rip off. No hot water, rooms were freezing and the customer service was very poor. Had stayed here after climbing Slieve Foy and all we wanted was a warm room and a hot shower. Friends who complained were given a grand discount of 20 euro. I would not stay here again.
