A friend and I were returning West after a long day away and had decided to call in for a bite to this place that I remember having a great impression of from a previous visit. We walked in the door to be told sorry they were closed since six (it was 6.35), but what were we looking for? We weren't sure what they had so we just said a bite of something. The woman who had hopped to her feet when we walked in (I later asked, to be told her name was Dee) said all they had left were scones and we could have those for free they were left over from the day, and ah sure if we wanted a cup of tea to go along with them it was no bother. She was so friendly and helpful and welcoming it made a lasting impression and I will make it a regular pit-stop in the future. Many thanks Dee :)

We ate here on two occasions recently and were very pleased with visit one; visit two was a little disappointing on the coffee front.

Esquires is ideally situated off the Red Cow roundabout outside Longford on the Mayo to Dublin route. There are lots of parking spaces around it and plenty shops in the business park as well.

The restaurant is very nicely laid out with different types of seating - coffee shop style and couch and coffee table style and is nicely sectioned off in one area. Some of the smaller tables are too close together and cause disturbance of other customers when navigating to and from the counter or bathroom. The choice of food is good and the food is tastily displayed. Unfortunately for us the soup was all gone on our first visit. On the one hand this was a good sign as it meant, for me, that the soup is made daily and I overcame my disappointment by having a nicely filled bagel instead. We love our 'flat white' coffee and were happy to see that the Barista knew what a real 'flat white' was.

Esquires pride themselves on their 'flat white' or flattie as they call it, however, the final coffee is very dependent on the passion of the Barista and day two was not as successful for us. If the espresso is not prepared correctly the latte art will not conceal a weak or a poorly pulled shot; that was the issue on day two. A good espresso, like a pint of Guinness, cannot be rushed and it has been our experience in a number of places recently that the staff seem to be of the impression that rushing - or being seen to be rushing- is more important than quality of service and product. A good barman will never rush pouring a Guinness; the customer appreciates this and returns time and again. A speciality coffee costs between €2.00 and €3.00; and this is for about 200ml - so the customer needs a good product each time.

The concept in Esquires is great, I would love to say that the product was excellent but, for me, the quality was compromised by the seeming lack of consistency in the coffee making and the rushing around. It doesn't help us to relax and relaxed customers may order extra food. Esquires is in an ideal place, as I said, an oasis en route to Dublin. I will go back a third time - lucky, or not, we'll see.....! Stay tuned!
