“Thoroughly enjoyed my one night stay”
Reviewed March 22, 2009

Spent one night to celebrate my birthday in a quiet, relaxing way, and this fitted the bill perfectly. Staff are very pleasant and attentive, the rooms are large and comfortable, and although i stayed in the new wing I took a walk around the beautiful old house. Lovely grounds for a walk or cycling, and nearby Maynooth is a lovely village.

Just returned from a one night stay in the Carton House. It's a beautiful, beautiful hotel, the bar and lobby area are really lovely, great atmosphere to relax in and have a drink and read the papers. Our room was similarly lovely with nice touches like a free television guide magazine in the room and a free Sunday morning paper outside our door the next day (even though this was the lowest rate room -superior). Also loved the leisure centre and enjoyed a lovely dip & jacuzzi.

The problem areas are around service and general organisation. We booked dinner in the restaurant over the phone before arriving but on arrival there was no record of this "on the system". The staff on reception called our room a few minutes later to say the booking was confirmed. Problem sorted - so we thought! When we went down to dinner (in the Linden tree retaurant) we were told we were actually booked into the "other restaurant". This turned out to be a room in the old part of the hotel that was cold and empty and had zero atmosphere. Also here there was a different menu with just 3 choices for each course, not what we wanted! We did eventually get back to the Linden tree retaurant after 30 mins of phone calls and organisation. Dinner was nice enough but the service was very slow and food suffered from having sat too long under hot lights. While our food was relatively ok, the couple at the next table sent one dish back for being too cold, and the couple at the table at the opposite side had 1 main meal delivered and then were told that there'd been a mix up and other meal would be another 25 minutes!

Overall we enjoyed our stay at the hotel but I would encourage all to confirm and double-confirm any restaurant bookings!

This was not my first trip to Carton House it being one of my favourite weekend getways. Its so close to Dublin and yet you feel like you are in the depths of the countryside once you enter the estate and the character of hotel public areas and bedrooms never fail to impress (it is nice to . This time I went with the girls for some pampering, the Spa has changed recently to Aveda and I have to say I loved the treatments! The day we were there the weather was freezing but the Spa was warm and invitng. A great way to spend a Saturday followed by drinks and a snack in the bar and dinner in the Restaraunt that night. The service and food were excellent and we really enjoyed our stay.

I attended a wedding reception there on Saturday evening and stayed the night. Everything was very professional and thoroughly enjoyable. Service and food were of a very high standard.

The walk around the lake was enjoyable but some of the facilities were unavailable, e.g., one of the paths was closed and the boats on the lake were out of actions. They were happy to let us use the leisure centre after we had checked out, and we didn’t feel rushed at all.

The prices for the room seem negotiable, and you should get a better price than the web price if you ring.

This was a great place to get away for a weekend & just chill! The complex is self-contained, so no need to go into town for anything, you can just relax & not worry about a schedule.

The service was excellent, very friendly staff. Hotel room was lovely, food very nice & on one of the nights we ate in the old section of the house, so special & romantic. The grounds go on for miles, so bring your walking shoes & go for a ramble, it really is so relaxing.

Yes, a nice treat, try it!

  • Liked — The grounds & the building are just spectacular
  • Disliked — No complaints really

My wife and I chose this hotel to celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary as it was close to Dublin and looked great on the website. On arrival, everything was fine and and the hotel appeared nice and contemporary (although strangely a little soulless for the location..old house etc). We checked in smoothly and were happy with the room and location. We decided to go to bar for a drink and a snack but soon noticed there were some staffing problems ie there were hardly any staff on and the hotel was very busy. After a long wait for service and then the food and drinks (which were not cheap!) we retired to our room. The next morning we went down for breakfast and were told we would have to wait for 20 mins in the lobby to be called for breakfast as there was no room in the restaurant, not a great start to our relaxing break. When we finally got to be seated for breakfast, it was a greasy buffet with semi-cold sausages and rashers sitting in grease. At the prices we were paying, i would have expected a freshly cooked breakfast. We were booked into the spa for treatments that day and this was the best part of our stay. Professional staff, good treatments. That night we were booked into the hotel restaurant, the Linden Tree (same room as breakfast) which the website boasted of as being a 'truly memorable experience'. Medicore food in a mediocre room was what we got. Not in any way special or interesting. I'm not being picky here but we paid out a lot of money for what was supposed to be a special weekend away. I would not reccommend this hotel to any of my family and friends as, in my opinon, it is badly run and overpriced.

Had a wonderful weekend here with my family. Such a wonderful location. It's not far from Dublin - but it feels like a world away (in a good way!).

The food is lovely in the restaurant and they have a lovely swimming pool.

Can't wait to go back here.
