“A nearly forgotten past remembered ”

The Irish Workhouse Centre
Ranked #1 of 6 things to do in Portumna

Passing through Portumna I saw a sign for the Irish Workhouse Centre and stopped in for a tour with my husband. It is not long open and in need of some more information sheets and some period furniture to help recreate the history of the place a bit more but please do not let that put you off. The tour guides have incredible knowledge of this place and other Irish workhouses. You are told about the day to day life of residents, what work they carried out and why they ended up in these dreadful places. This place will send a chill down your spine, it is a stark reminder of our sad past and it should not be forgotten. I would encourage people to visit this place especially students of Irish history.

I have been travelling to Portumna since 2006, and have been watching the progress of the restoration of the work houses. This year I was finally able to enter the houses and see the interiors for the first time. The exhibit is excellent, very moving and really give you an insight as to how the poor Irish were treated back in the days of the English landlords. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. It is haunting to stand in the dormitories and outer yards and know that people suffered untold misery within those walls. I highly recommend this tour. The website for the workhouse is also well worth a look.http://irishworkhousecentre.ie/

The work houses were falling into disrepair until recently. There is so much to learn. I will tour again the next time I am in the area. The guides are passionate about the subject and will take the time to answer questions. They are accommodating to those with problems going up and down the stairs. Unfortunately there are no elevators.
