Passing through Portumna I saw a sign for the Irish Workhouse Centre and stopped in for a tour with my husband. It is not long open and in need of some more information sheets and some period furniture to help recreate the history of the place a bit more but please do not let that put you off. The tour guides have incredible knowledge of this place and other Irish workhouses. You are told about the day to day life of residents, what work they carried out and why they ended up in these dreadful places. This place will send a chill down your spine, it is a stark reminder of our sad past and it should not be forgotten. I would encourage people to visit this place especially students of Irish history.
