Old Monastery Hostel

Don't be fooled by the exterior which could do with a major declutter! If you want to escape totally this is the place to go. It's basic but clean and very comfortable and the location is very convenient for walking, relaxing and popping down to the local shop so it ticks all the boxes. The microwave doesn't work so there's an incentive not to buy microwavable fast food! There is no lighter provided for the gas stove in the kitchen so bring a box of matches or you'll end up having to try to light the stove in the kitchen from the open fire in the sitting room without burning your fingers! It's all part of the adventure! A nutritious and delicious breakfast is provided free of charge which is a huge bonus.

Room Tip: The room called 'The Church' has it's own sink and shower. All the bunkbeds I saw had do...

I stayed at the Old Monastery hostel for two nights to enjoy the surrounding area of the Connemara national park. The owner is a quiet guy who doesn't talk as much as others might expect him to, however he is polite and quite friendly. The bedrooms, bathrooms and the kitchen are all clean and with a certain charm. The tasty breakfast is included in the 15€ per night!! If you can wait 2min for the douche water to turn hot and don't expect the hotel manager to hold you hand at night you will enjoy your stay,

The old monastery hostel is a really nice place to stay and located great to explor the connemara national park. The owner, steve, is a friendly and layed back guy who won't be around all the time, but can be reached on his phone if there are any questions. The interior looks really cool with it's antique and unique decoration. So to make it short; nice and easy people, good breakfast, cozy beds, great location and best price by far!

I had wanted to come to this place for some time, as I stayed there many years ago and had fond memories.
Myself and my girlfriend stayed there last weekend. Decided on Friday morning that we needed to get away, went to the Old Monastery Hostel and stayed there Friday and Saturday.
The Hostel is just amazing, I can't express how captivated we were by the surroundings as soon as we arrived. There were many great characters staying there and we managed to fit right in.
There's a great fireplace in the living area and we felt comfortable lounging around the hostel all evening. There's also an amazing ginger cat, I didn't quite manage to get his name, but he was very friendly. The disco bathroom is a must see! There is also a fire place in the bathroom with ambient music playing there all day long.
The owner of the hostel, Steve, is a gentleman and I had great conversations with him while we stayed there.
Breakfast was great! I think they bake the bread there and it tastes fantastic.
Right behind the hostel you have the mountain they call the "Diamond", it's a great hike, with a beautiful view of connemara from the top.
Many people here complained about the cleanliness, I genuinely didn't find it dirty, I was quite satisfied with the overall hygeine of the place. You would really need to be a right fussy boots to turn your nose up at this place, it is just a remarkable place to stay and it is only 15euros per person. I think we're planning a return visit in the next couple of months.

Room Tip: just get there and go with the flow. Don't be picky little backpacker

The hostel is certainly very unique – and in my mind a gem. There are things to discover everywhere – like a confession box in our room filled with ties and bras. If you are okay with a place that isn't as sterile as a five-star hotel, you can feel very much at home in the Old Monastery.

One of my favourite spots in Ireland is Connemara in Galway. I love the landscapes out there and the tranquility. So smack bang in the middle of this little village in Letterfrack, Connemara, Galway is a hostel so fun of crazy brick-a-brack i could only ay we were very amused.

The hostel is a renovated old monastery. The decor is what can only be described as a random assortment of odds and ends the owner perhaps picks up on his travels or perhaps travellers leave their unwanted junk with him. Outside there are things like fairy lights draped across the shingles, odd chairs and couches and tables, colourful bikes, illuminous junk hanging everywhere. It's what gives it it's character. And to top it all off downstairs there is a confessional... yes, a wooden confessional box with ladies brassiers hanging inside it :p

The showers have disco lights inside them which twinkle majestically while u shower... the 'disco shower' was an experience to say the least. The owner makes a traditional breakfast for all the guests of brown bread, porridge and jam while you sit on the hardwood tables, beside the wine bottles being used as candle stands with decades of encrusted wax flowing down their rims and enjoy the wilderness.

It's not the most clean place ever but it adds to the charm of the place. If you are looking for luxury this is NOT the ideal place to stay. and i will stress that this is A LOVE IT OR HATE IT type place.

Close by is the breathtaking Klyemore Abbey and National Park.

You would definitely need a car to get to this place. But i cannot wait to go back.

It was very empty when we stayed there which was lovely.

The Old Monastery Hostel has its own charm: high rooms and windows from the floor to the top, books everywhere (next to the beds, on the walls, on the floors, in the bathroom,...) and lovely decorated with old pictures, instruments and candels.
Located next to the entrance to the Nationalpark, one minute away from the pub and the supermarket/bank it is a good place to stay.
The owner is currently on vacation but the man who runs it instead was really friendly and made us a great breakfast (porridge, bread, scones, oranges,...)!
With at least 15€ per night it is a bit expensive for the low season.
