“Great place to stay!”
Reviewed September 8, 2011

I have stayed a few times at The Old Monastery Hostel! I love it, it's a great place to relax and stay in. I was made to feel very welcome whenever I stayed over, by Stephen, the owner - and I would highly recommend the hostel to anyone wanting to stay around Letterfrack. The breakfast at the hostel is beautiful - and consists of homemade bread (brown and soda baked), lots of boiled eggs, porridge and brewed coffee - all served by a very welcoming person!

Nice place for a hostel but they had taken in a large group of French teenagers and the entire hostel had one (1!) functioning shower and three toilets. In addition, there's a couch in the boathroom and a mock fireplace meaning that the bathroom gets used by other guests as a place to chill out and get warm - right next to the toilet cubicles that only have partial walls. We had to wait five hours (v. late evening) to shower and a poor man with stomach trouble had to "go" audially in front of a bunch of stoned teenagers. In terms of cleanliness: If you drop something under your bed, don't try to pick it up. The staff seem nice but are difficult to get hold of.

There are cleaner and more modern award winning hostels but the reason for staying here is the experience and it is not to be missed. Where else can you take a candlelit shower with mood music in a cubicle with blue neon fairy lights behind the walls! :-) This place is bonkers and brill!

Our friends that had never hosteled before were a bit shocked at first but soon warmed to the place and its character. Ok, you'll find some dust here and there but our beds were clean. Many of the rooms are themed so you can stay in the African room if you like.

If you don't give it a try, then you're missing out. We cycled from Letterfrack to Cong the next day and to be honest, the next hostel whilst clean, tidy and modern, but missing character. Go on, give it a try! Or go and stay somewhere more boring instead.

we were kept waiting for over an hour to check in, which made us miss the chance to get dinner anywhere. when I complained to the man checking us in - apparently the owner - he was not apologetic at all and muttered something about not waiting around all evening to check us in. this was the worst kind of welcome and I felt like we should leave - but it was too late to know if we could get a room elsewhere. the room seemed dirty and there was a lot of noise from the kitchen, late in the night.

This place is such a find that im reluctant to share it lest it be ruined by commercialism. However, having read some of the scathing reviews on trip advisor about the owner and the place, and having nearly been put off investigating myself, I must set the record straight. I can only surmise that the bad reviews came from luddites who would nt know charm and hospitality if it smacked them in the face! The place is relaxed and low key, dont expect the proprieter to fall off his chair to welcome you. We were invited to have dinner, and for ten euro a head, it was a sumptious feast-boy can this chap cook! Expect wholesome, home cooked heaven. We had delicious home made minestrone-like soup, home made pizza, beautiful salads, fresh lobster and home baked dessert. Its also a wonderful dining experience, in the company of other travellers, dining room covered in all sorts of interesting bric-a-brac, blues and jazz music playing tastefully in the background. Afterwards, if the hill walking has nt finished you off, sit outside under an awning, drink more wine or beer and enjoy the company or toast yourself by the wonderful fireplace in the sitting room. My sensible well behaved dog was more than welcome, and pottered around the place with no problem from proprieter or other guests. In conclusion, if you dislike the generic uptightness of the standard modern hostel experience, and you dont have howard hughes levels of hygiene, and you crave an adventure off the beaten track, this is the one for you. Just remember to be respectful.

I stayed here with my fiance and we both hated it. Rude would be an understatement to describe the manager. He was downright mean. We could not WAIT to get out of there. The ONLY good thing about our time in Letterfrack was going to Molly's Pub down the road, because the people were lovely and apologized for the behavior of the manager of this Hostel. I would not send my worst enemy to this place.

We stayed there for one night with a friend but definitely had stayed longer if possible.

The place is just amazing...Full of all kind of crazy old things - outside, and inside! - wooden floors and big fireplaces...Breakfast was just great, with freshly baked home bread, porridge, eggs...loved it!! Also great to meet people. The french girl who was holding the place was really nice and helpful.
On the wrong side, it was really freezing cold in the house...but under 3 covers it was OK!! The place can get a bit scary at night...but this is part of the experience!

Also Letterfrack is a cute little village, with a big (well, on the Connemara scale!) supermarket, and nice pubs. From the hostel you are just like 50m from the second entrance to the national park...perfect for an early visit in the morning if you want to feel alone in the place...a great feeling!!

So be aware, if you don't mind the mess (i think it's part of the place!), and some dust, and just want to spend the night the most atypic hostel Ive ever seen, you should defintely go there!!
