“3rd time lucky”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2010

stayed here for 1 night with my sister. i had a voucher which i received from a previous visit as at that time i had a few issues. this was my 3rd visit, and i must say it was the best. the hotel was very quite and relaxed, where before i visited at 2 very busy times.this really is a lovely modern hotel. we stayed in a suite and it was perfect, fab bathroom and powerful shower. we ate in bar,as previously food is a little pricey, however it is of a superior standard to your average bar food. I am glad i gave it another visit and will definitley be going back in the new year.

Stayed for a family wedding. Poor lighting in the rooms. Room had not been hoovered in ages...rubbish from previous guests and dust under all the furniture, lots of pubic hair on the bathroom floor. Food is good but pricey. Staff very helpful. Room decor bland and paint in need of touching up. Some of the grounds need to be finished / tidied up.

Myself, my wife and our two small children stayed for the weekend in this hotel, the facilities are excellent, food is top class and overall a very enjoyable stay.

A special mention and word of thanks to the Hotel Manager, (Dominic, to my recollection), for his professionalism and curteous manner.

Stayed here for a wedding recently and was not impressed. On check-in, we went to our room to find the bed unmade and wet towels on the floor and table. Rang down to reception to tell them and they made only a cursory apology and told us to come down again to reception to get a new room, which was annoying-they should have met us at a new room rather than us trekking all around the hotel with our suitcases. Then they didnt even allow us to skip the long queue of wedding guests waiting to check-in. The service from the girl on the desk was unfriendly and harried-they should have had more people on at such a busy time so it wasn't fully her fault. Then in the new room there were no toiletries so we had to embark on a mission to get them.Other little niggles were the nice cosy bar being locked for the duration of the wedding with the only option for a quiet drink being in the big, brightly lit sports-bar with big screens blaring. Also, at breakfast, when I pointed out to the waiter that we would probably need another pot of tea-there was one smallish pot between three- he replied in a really argumentative voice that the pot held enough for three. Sure enough, when we wanted more tea, there were no staff to be seen so we had to get up and find a waiter who seemingly promised to get some but walked around for ages doing nothing and never brought the tea..None of these things are a big deal on their own but all add up to a below par experience for the price. I would not recommend.

We stayed here last week for 5 nights and great time. Hotel is very large and was extremely bust when we were there however was very enjoyable and great for the kids. The swimming pool was brilliant which they loved and they also did a kids club 2 nights whereby they did supervised swimming, arts & crafts, dinner time and then DVD. This really made the trip for my kids. The food was really good in the bar and very reasonably priced. The only downside was the heat in the bedrooms, although there was air con it wasnt great and didnt make that much of a difference, and to open the window you could then hear all the noise from the function rooms. However working in hotels I know that this is part & parcel of hotel life during the summer months, it wouldn't put me off returning. Its also a great base location for Athlone and Galway as theres not much in Ballinasloe itself. But great hotel, lovely staff and well worth a visit.

Hotel was very nice, rooms nice and comfortable, breakfast was ok - fruit salad was very poor, bar nice atmosphere....There is same menu for bar and restaurant, when we asked for a la carte they didnt have any, but have to say that food was absolutely delicious!!!!
There is not much to to in Ballinasloe but not far from Athlone or Galway.

Our stay at the Carlton Shearwater was everything we could have hoped for-a large, clean, quiet room with a large, clean bathroom, a great spa with a large swimming pool and jacuzzi. The weight room was large as well with a good number of treadmills. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Just a 20 minute drive east of Galway or an hour and a half from Dublin, this hotel is a great choice.
