Stayed here for a wedding recently and was not impressed. On check-in, we went to our room to find the bed unmade and wet towels on the floor and table. Rang down to reception to tell them and they made only a cursory apology and told us to come down again to reception to get a new room, which was annoying-they should have met us at a new room rather than us trekking all around the hotel with our suitcases. Then they didnt even allow us to skip the long queue of wedding guests waiting to check-in. The service from the girl on the desk was unfriendly and harried-they should have had more people on at such a busy time so it wasn't fully her fault. Then in the new room there were no toiletries so we had to embark on a mission to get them.Other little niggles were the nice cosy bar being locked for the duration of the wedding with the only option for a quiet drink being in the big, brightly lit sports-bar with big screens blaring. Also, at breakfast, when I pointed out to the waiter that we would probably need another pot of tea-there was one smallish pot between three- he replied in a really argumentative voice that the pot held enough for three. Sure enough, when we wanted more tea, there were no staff to be seen so we had to get up and find a waiter who seemingly promised to get some but walked around for ages doing nothing and never brought the tea..None of these things are a big deal on their own but all add up to a below par experience for the price. I would not recommend.

We stayed here last week for 5 nights and great time. Hotel is very large and was extremely bust when we were there however was very enjoyable and great for the kids. The swimming pool was brilliant which they loved and they also did a kids club 2 nights whereby they did supervised swimming, arts & crafts, dinner time and then DVD. This really made the trip for my kids. The food was really good in the bar and very reasonably priced. The only downside was the heat in the bedrooms, although there was air con it wasnt great and didnt make that much of a difference, and to open the window you could then hear all the noise from the function rooms. However working in hotels I know that this is part & parcel of hotel life during the summer months, it wouldn't put me off returning. Its also a great base location for Athlone and Galway as theres not much in Ballinasloe itself. But great hotel, lovely staff and well worth a visit.

Hotel was very nice, rooms nice and comfortable, breakfast was ok - fruit salad was very poor, bar nice atmosphere....There is same menu for bar and restaurant, when we asked for a la carte they didnt have any, but have to say that food was absolutely delicious!!!!
There is not much to to in Ballinasloe but not far from Athlone or Galway.

Our stay at the Carlton Shearwater was everything we could have hoped for-a large, clean, quiet room with a large, clean bathroom, a great spa with a large swimming pool and jacuzzi. The weight room was large as well with a good number of treadmills. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Just a 20 minute drive east of Galway or an hour and a half from Dublin, this hotel is a great choice.

From DH: Stayed two nights with dad in March. Priced like its trying to be an upscale chain hotel, but fell way short on service, food and value. New, clean bedroom with good AC! Bed was comfortable with new sheets. Nice bathroom with good water pressure. Took forever to check in, elevators really slow, restaurant closed during posted open hours, food was overpriced. Parking was free when we were there although there was a sign for a $10 charge. There really isn't much in this town so you're probably staying here either way.

Went to the Carlton Shearwater with family in June. When we arrived we checked in and went up to our room. We had ordered a 3 bed room but there was only 2 beds there, so we told the girl at reception and she said they were still had to bring it up. So later when we got back there was a camp bed in our room too. We thought it would be a bit uncomfortabe but it was actually fine. They had free internet access in all rooms too, which was great! The food in the hoel was delicious and even the choice of food for the kids was great. Really enjoyed stay and would reccomend this hotel to anyone!

spent 2 nights in the hotel for a family function.the rooms were spacious and clean and the service was fantastic.the meal served for the function was top notched, sadly the breakfast was`nt .we`ve had better at a premeir inn.
Did`nt use the spa due to it being closed on mondays and tuesdays.
Didnt use the pool either because we didnt fancy having to wear a swimming hat which is a regulation in ireland apparently.
overall we really enjoyed our stay and would stay again.
