We stop in Killybegs for a break while on our way to Kilcar and surronding areas . We rarely spend time there as there is little to do or see bar a few piers. Although we did not stay in the hotel we used the bar area to order food. We ate here before and had a disastrous meal with uncooked fish which had to be returned to the kitchen. However we decided to try again to see if things had improved...

Having read the food reviews for this hotel we wondered if we were in the same place. Service was fairly swift but there is a lack of warmth in the staffs service (as if they are going through the motions. The food was ok (small portions )however we sat for fifteen minutes before seeing anyone we could ask to clear the plates away. When they did there was no offer of dessert/tea/coffee. For somewhere so quiet the manner of service is brusque. As before we left feeling like we had put the staff out of their way, will not be returning.

My wife and I stayed for one night while visiting a Classic car Rally in nearby Frosses. We had a comfortable well appointed room, with a balcony, to the rear of the hotel overlooking the main street. Our stay included a nice evening meal in the bar with views of the harbour and an excellent breakfast, served in our room. The staff were, without exception friendly and efficient especially the hard working and ever smiling Niamh on Reception.

Two shops just across the road from the hotel entrance, open late are useful if you need to top up with something. The hotel only seems to have a few balcony rooms. Those overlooking the harbour would be nice, but remember that Killybegs is a working port with large trawlers, interesting but probably not as atmospheric as some smaller harbours on the West coast of Ireland. But the Tara a great base for visiting South Donegal.

We arrived mid evening to get a very nice large room (Queen size double, single bed and two double sofa beds) would have been better if it was a sea view but cant complain. We ate in the restaurant which was ok the mustard mash was the highlight for me. The waitress was especially friendly engaging in conversation with my young son. The free wifi was really good especially having a teenager son. My youngest was eager to see the new adjacent playpark which wasnt ready yet but looks good when it is finished. On reflection room was large, quiet, nice and clean. Staff were welcoming (Guinness was pretty good too) and breakfast was very nice french toast and maple syrup a must. I would stay again.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view, local newsagent to rear of hotel for room snacks.

The staff at the Tara Hotel went above and beyond. The stay was more than pleasant and the location suitable to see the many wonders of Ireland. The food was wonderful and again catered to the special needs of my sister. I have recommended this hotel to my friends and I plan on returning with friends.
