Enjoyed my short stay here. I had requested a room with disabled facilities and was pleased to find a level deck shower suitable for wheelchair users, although not in a wheelchair I do have mobility problems. However when using the shower ,because the curtain did not reach the floor a lot of water started pooling on the highly glazed floor tiles. An inappropriate metal mesh garden chair was provided as a seat for the shower, I did try to use it but it shot across the shower floor which unnerved me, so I just stood up.Exiting the bathroom was a nightmare, I had to walk across a selection of towels (a trip hazard in itself), the floor was lethal! Please put in a non-slip floor and a shower seat secured to the wall.Otherwise, fast Wi-Fi internet in the room was great, however the lighting is poor , the 'bedside' lights are half way up the wall, totally useless for reading by! Comfy bed and clean room. Food in the 'Turntable' restaurant unexceptional but the views over the harbour were great. Breakfast next morning was fine. Staff went to great lengths to advise us of an interesting route to Downings, given our time restraints, and were very helpful. I would stay here again but bring my own shower stool.

The Pros: The Tara Hotel is centrally located and it is a clean, modern, relatively inexpensive hotel which employs a helpful, extremely friendly staff. There is a restaurant located on the ground floor, although I found it rather expensive.

The Cons: Since the Tara Hotel is located across the street from the largest fishing port in Ireland, invariably there is going to be noise coming from the trucks, commercial fishing boats, and fishermen at all hours of the night.

Room Tip: If you don't want to be disturbed by the constant noise from the docks, request a room on the no...

Spent one night at the Tara.
It's an OK place with worn rooms that aren't cleaned to a terribly high standard. There was dirt and some garbage left behind in a drawer by a previous guest. The carpet could use a deep clean or to be replaced.
We asked for a view room and did get one, with a view over the harbor and a nice shared terrace out the full glass door.
Unfortunately the large fishing boats right across the street kept a generator running loudly all night (it finally shut off at 6 AM). I realize this isn't the fault of the hotel, but more something to be aware of if you're a light sleeper.
My best one word descriptor of the Tara Hotel would "institutional".

We stayed here for one night mid April.
I felt that the hotel was not good value for money
The rooms whilst having a good view of the harbour felt very tired.
We only had a snack in the hotel bar it was ok had much better.
Again Breakfast was just ok would have preferred waitress service, the dining room could have done with a good clean in my opinion.
had fish and chips in a chippy just behind the hotel which were very good got 2 fish!.
Not much going on in the town lot of places closed down would choose a different town next time in this part of the country.

We stayed here last week and had an excellent meal within view of the harbour. Our only negative comment on this establishment is that that the breakfast was very unimaginative and typical of B&B/Hotels around the country. White sliced pan toasted,Fried processed sausages, pudding etc instead of a wide selection of homemade breads, grilled butchers sausages, pudding, bacon etc. A better range of products would help, ie pickled herring, kippers, mackeral, eggs benadictine, cheeses, melon, freshly squeesed orange juice. Get rid of the cheap processed food, use the grill, not the frying pan and utilise the seafood products for breakfast. The room and bed were excellent and staff very helpful. Not everyone wants a greasy full Irish!

I stayed here for one night in mid March 2012. I got a room facing Killybegs harbour, which was a nice view. The bed was very comfortable; I slept like a log for the entire night, despite a bit of a hum coming from some of the equipment on the harbour.
Staff were very friendly, and the food at both dinner and breakfast was excellent; particularly dinner, which was of a quality that I would normally equate with a much higher-priced restaurant.
I would definitely recommend staying here, for business or pleasure.

Room Tip: Ask for a harbour view
