I enjoyed the visit to the Donegal Carpet Factory.

We first watched a video that was clearly last updated in the late 60's, followed by an informative insight into this age old tradition.

Enjoyable but not exactly exciting...

Very interesting interactive museum. Maritime part had a great local ship (trawler) captain explaining the history of Killybegs fishing fleet, as well as a very sophisticated marine ship simulator where you can try out your ship handling skills. The other part covered the hand knotted rug factory that had been in Killybegs for years. Again, there was a very interesting person to show how the rugs were made and help you try a few knots on a sample piece. We found the centre well worth our time.

Excellent place to visit; you start by watching a dvd of Donegal Carpets, and we were lukcy enough to be able to watch a second video on the history of fishing industry in Killybegs. We were lucky enough to go on a quiet day and thus had a tour of the carpet factory by ourselves. It was great to try out the knots on an actual carpet as well! The only disappointment was when we visited they were still getting the maritime part set up or re-done up, there was only the fishing boat simulator game and a few wall hangings of knots, but the lady did say they were waiting on new exhibits for this part. Overall a great way to pass a few hours and very reasonably priced!

We were visiting Killybegs on our trip to the Slieve Leagues in Donegal,we decided to stop in The maritime & heritage centre for a cup of tea,the staff was so helpfull and welcoming that we decided to stay and do a tour.We started by watching a dvd of how the carpets were made and were then taken on a guided tour into part of the old factory. It was very interesting and fun epecially when i tried a knot or 2 myself. The kids had a great time playing on the shipsimulator. Will recommend it to everyone who is visiting Killybegs.
