Spend some time walking around and checking out the political/nationally significant park and take in it's beauty. If you're there with friends, either stick together or make sure you know how long you want to spend there. We lost two of our friends for about an hour because they really wanted to take their time!

Ok - to me, it has not been as impressive as other natural sites in Iceland. However, it is well worth a visit if you can imagine the old times when the ruling families met there.

I was not into the history of the park, but the scenery is wonderful. Huge basalt ridge, powerfull waterfall, picturesque church, all made for great views and photos.
no entry fee
very accessible for anyone of any ability.
maybe an hour's drive from Reykjavik - worth the stop while on the golden circle route

This place is just awesome. Standing in the canyon where the 2 tectonic plates collide is probably one of the most powerful places on the planet, be sure that you get a 30 min crash course in history before you come there to real appreciate the place.

This is also the oldest parliament in the world and there is a another history there worth checking out.

The place is truly powerful, historical and spiritual. If you only come to one place in Iceland this would have to be it.

This is a place anyone with some interest in history (or geology) should visit if they have a chance. It's beautiful (by Icelandic standards certainly, if you're a fan of white sandy beaches and palm trees, you're in the wrong place) and fascinating. Dress warm, bring a guide book, a guide or read the plaques. As others have said, you can stay for a fairly short time, just a few hours, and see most of the "important" things, or stay for longer and really take in the scenery.
