“Family Room is Great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 11, 2013

We stayed here (2 adults and 2 teenaged kids) and had the family room. I think it's newly renovated with the 2 single beds for the kids in a separate room. The bathroom is huge and has all the amenities that you would need. It is excellent value. I must add that dinner at the restaurant was exceptional - local ingredients beautifully cooked. In fact, we felt that the food far exceeded the dinner we had at the more stylish Hotel Ranga in terms of taste. I would highly recommend this hotel if you're visiting the South. Wish we had stayed an extra night instead of another less comfortable cottage option that we decided on for the next night!!

This was our second time to stay in this charming hotel. We were not disappointed as it has been remodeled and some new rooms have been added. We treated ourselves to one of these new rooms--a suit--a luxury we did not regret. Spacious and comfortable, the room had beautiful views, a most comfortable bed (especially important with my wife's bad back), a lovely modern bathroom. The two large comfy reading chairs could have used some more light for reading and the modern bathroom could use a little more light over the mirror. There is an interesting surprise in this room: a neon light band installed in a ceiling valence with a control panel to program special effects in many colors and variations of timing. Since we are familiar with light sculpture as artworks, we found this to be more interesting and fun than expected. It does not, of course, have to be activated unless you want it for atmosphere or entertainment.
The hotel also has original artworks on its walls in the entry and dining area that add to the ambiance and a classy feeling. In November, the hot tub was being re-done, adding changing rooms and other improvements, so we didn't get to experience it this time. We highly recommend this hotel. We'll go again.

Room Tip: Ask for the suite with the neon lighting artwork. Fun.

Really liked Hotel Hekla starting with the nicely decorated rooms (we got to stay in a newly refurbished one, not all rooms are possibly as nice), the cosy bar with full moon view and the hot tub with amazing sights over the countryside. It was so relaxing that I could have stayed longer. We stayed for one night only but would definitely come back. Also, very much enjoyed the dinner and breakfast at the hotel. Good quality food.

We stayed here in October, so just in the off-season. The rooms were spacious with great views of the open land. We made use of the hot tub on site, as well. Best part was the excellent dinner and cozy bar area that the hotel provided. The lamb dinner was superb, although slightly pricey. The staff was mostly friendly and accommodating. Great value in Selffoss.

Lovely large room, friendly and helpful staff and a very good dinner. Close to Golden Circle and therefore very accessible. Seems to have large grounds but we were time limited and had no chance to explore.

Nicest hotel we stayed in our tour of Iceland, lovely décor and atmosphere, wonderful chefs and freshly cooked food, pleasant accommodating staff, great hot tub. Situated in a quiet peaceful area. Highly recommend!

We stayed at Hotel Hekla one night before doing a Golden Circle tour. The rooms were very comfortable, price was reasonable, and the view of Hekla from the balcony was lovely. If you need entertainment, note there were only 3 stations available on TV to choose from (and only CNN was in English).

There was a Northern Lights bus tour staying the same night we were, which was quite noisy during the first few hours of the night, with doors banging every few minutes and loud talking in the hallway. It looks like this would be a great place to see the aurora, low light pollution and a balcony around the top floor rooms.

Breakfast in the morning was quite busy (also due to the bus tour), but there was plenty of selection to choose from - boiled eggs, cereal, fresh baked breads, cheeses, cold cuts, etc. My husband had some of the cake (marriage cake?) with oats and fruit, which was excellent.

This was a great location to kick-off our Golden Circle tour and beat the bus tours.

Room Tip: Upper level with balcony if you want to sit out, or for Northern Lights viewing
