We stayed here one night after doing the "Golden Circle" tour. The farm is just outside Selfoss and is easy to find from the main highway.

The room we had was located in a large charmless portable building at the end of a an unpaved parking lot. The room was clean but small and very basic. A bed, a tiny bathroom with shower, a wardrobe and little else. There was not a mirror, clock, radio or television.

The main kitchen/dining area was located several meters away on the other side of the unpaved parking lot. It was a very big open space with free WIFI and Xmas lights to soften the edges of the space. It had the rustic charm of a rural community centre.

Breakfast was a generous assortment of delicious homemade breads and jams and fresh made waffles plus cold cuts and cold boiled eggs, skyr, coffee, tea and juice. Service was friendly and relaxed and provided by four or five young adults working in the kitchen/dining area.

The Innkeeper and her husband are very friendly, straight forward and easygoing. They were serving trout caught from the nearby lake for dinner but we decided to head for Selfoss for something a bit more budget.

There was a very good playground for children and several friendly dogs belonging to the Innkeepers running about, as well as a domesticated arctic fox cub and a young calf. It all has the feel of staying at a favorite uncle's farm for the weekend. Would work best for families and people who love animals and home made breakfasts.

Most people visiting Iceland seem to take one of two tacks: they either stay in Reykjavik and take organized tours from the capital or they traverse the ring road. Certainly both are viable options, depending on how you like to travel, but we decided instead to focus our time mostly in the south. For us (and our animal-loving kids), it was the perfect choice. We stayed a full week at Vatnsholt and used the great location just outside of Selfoss as our base for day trips to places like Gulfoss, Geysir, and Thingvellir.

We really loved everything about Vatnsholt, but if I was forced to pick one thing to rave about more than others, it would be the hosts, who are just wonderfully nice (and acommodating) people. For example, we got in after 2:00 a.m. Iceland time. Because they knew we were running late, one of the two owners waited roadside on the closest major road so he could personally direct us to the B&B. Who else does that? And, despite rolling in in the middle of the night, we were offered food if we were hungry. From start to finish, they make you feel at home.

The family rooms are spacious and comfortable. We stayed in the smaller of the two family rooms (2 adults and 2 kids) and never had a problem. The larger suite is beautiful as well, with two bedrooms, an eat in kitchen and living room, and private bath. The other rooms were more typically hotel sized, but certainly comfortable for one or two.

For kids, the place is paradise. Friendly dogs wander the grounds along with a cow (who thinks he's a dog) and an arctic fox, who thinks he's part of the family as well. There's lots of running around space, a trampoline, and a play structure. The hosts are happy to let the kids help feed the animals.

Breakfasts are typically Icelandic, though better than many. Fresh meats, cheeses, breads, cereal, fruit, and waffles are offered every day in a comfortable restaurant and sitting lounge. Dinner in the restaurant is surprisingly upscale.

To the extent that you want to arrange other activities (i.e. horseback riding, etc.), the host couple are at hand to help. They were, without exception, the best hosts we had the whole trip.

Sadly, many people seemed to stop for only a day as they raced along the ring road. And everyone we met who was doing so, bemoaned the fact that they didn't stay longer.

Go and enjoy.

Room Tip: Families should ask for one of the two family rooms - they're great. The smaller one has a bunk bed for the kids and a large fold-out couch bed (comfortable, trust me) for the adults. In the larger suite, the kids have a separate room with two beds.

Our room was extremely small and the bathroom ridiculously small, but for one night it was adequate. The window had only a thin curtain and one side of the bed was up against a wall. They ask that you take off your shoes before going to your room and provide slippers to use. This is a bit unusual, but I can see why they ask this.

The dining / relaxing area looks to be completely renovated with IKEA decor and is a nice space. The menu was prix fixe and a bit expensive for a B&B ($43 pp). The food was very good, but a choice of some smaller plates would have been a nice option. Gull beer on tap a nice plus.

This was the only place in Iceland where we had to pay for breakfast at a B&B. Given that this place is remote, we paid the $12 pp for convenience purposes only. The breakfast is nice and has many choices including hot waffles.

The farm setting is great and there is so much going on. I think there are 7 dogs, a cat, goats, horses, a "pet" cow, and chickens, quails, pheasant, etc. We were also lucky enough to meet their new Arctic fox pup. She was so adorable and guests were actually able to pick her up and watch as she played with the dogs and ran around like crazy.

The highlight of this place and the reason I would recommend is the friendly service, the beautiful country setting and interacting with real farm life. We enjoyed Vatnsholt and would return again.

It is of course unfortunate, that you found a few negatives for the rooms and overall the place, but we are very glad, that it was nicely overwieghted by the positives, because that's the most important thing for us! :)

Stayed here for a couple of nights to break up a trip around the Golden Circle. Located on a farm about ten minutes' drive out of Selfoss. It's a nice drive and easy to find. Nice views around the farm, very peaceful, laidback rural setting.

Rooms are basic. Wireless internet is available in the rooms but expensive, but you can get access in the restaurant for free at a decent speed. Owner was very friendly and welcoming, Breakfast was hearty.

I would highly recommend visiting the restaurant for supper. At first I was annoyed because the meal took quite a long time to come, but it was cooked to absolute perfection, which more than made up for the wait. The homemade chocolate cake for dessert was heavenly.

Arrived on Friday afternoon to be greeted by six dogs (Fiona was my favourite), a calf, an arctic fox and a field of horses - this was more than a bed and breakfast. Wish we'd stayed longer as the rooms were better value for money, the beds more comfortable and the hosts more hospitable than anywhere else we'd stayed. Very highly recommended, get there early as you'll want to spend time with the animals...
