“Best place to stay in Iceland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2013

My partner and I stayed at Grimsborgir for three nights and we absolutely loved it. In fact, we wished we could have stayed for longer. We arrived at the hotel on a Sunday afternoon to a warm welcome and were given a free upgrade to a four bedroom apartment (No. 15). The apartment was very clean, comfortable, warm and had all the amenities that we could have wished for. The apartment had three big double bedrooms, a smaller bedroom, a big living / dining / kitchen room (with working fireplace), a television watching area (satellite TV and DVD player), a spacious main bathroom (with waik-in shower) and a smaller bathroom. The kitchen area was equipped with a fridge, freezer, dishwasher, oven, hob, tea/coffee maker and plenty of crockery / pots / pans etc. The apartment had underfloor heating throughout, free wifi and an enormous amount of storage space. Outside, there was a table and chairs, a barbecue and a hot tub. There was also plenty of parking space.

The restaurant was a short walk from our apartment which is where we ate breakfast and dinner each day. The breakfast buffet was excellent and had both warm and cold food on offer. After breakfast on the first morning, the owner (Olafur) very kindly highlighted some local tourist attractions on a map for us. Incidentally, the Grimsborgir is conveniently situated for visiting various Golden Circle attractions, such as the waterfall at Gullfoss (approximately 50 minute drive), Geysir (40 minute drive from Grimsborgir, and 10 minutes from Gullfoss), Þingvellir National Park (approximately 30 minute drive - but consider the longer drive to the west of Þingvallavatn). The Fontana geothermal baths at Laugavatn are also close by (a 20 minute drive) and well worth the visit.

The Grimsborgir hotel/apartments are located in a tranquil area with beautiful scenery. We found it easy to find when driving from Keflavik airport. The town of Selfoss is also close (15 mins drive), where there is a supermarket, petrol station etc.

We had a wonderful stay at Grimsborgir and are already thinking of returning for another holiday!

Room Tip: We had apartment 15, which was spacious and very well decorated. It also has large north facing wind...

A great spot to stay, central to all the big sights, and well worth the drive. Comfortable room (though bathroom lighting could have been brighter), efficient check in, delicious buffet dinner and breakfast and welcoming staff.

My 4 year old wanted to live there forever and the rest of our party (4 adults) felt very much the same.

The 4 bedroom apartment we stayed in was perfect (no 9). It was like having our own show home to live in.

We arrived at about 16:30 to a lovely warm apartment, the hot tub was demonstrated and fired up for us and we had time for a quick dip before making the short walk back to the restaurant for the amazing buffet. The rest of the evening was spent on the apartments patio enjoying the stars.

The next day after a massive breakfast back in the restaurant, we headed 5 mins up the road to selfoss and easily found a well stocked supermarket and the local beer and wine store.
It was a easy drive from the apartment to visit gulfoss and geysir. The kitchen was easy to find our way around and had all the equipment we needed to cook and enjoy our evening meal. We then spent the evening outside in awe enjoying the splendor of the Aurora Borealis.

Another fantastic breakfast and then headed out to pingvellir national park, again another fairly short drive. A small flurry of snow meant no show for the lights but made for an interesting hot tub experience that evening.

After out final feast of a breakfast we sadly said good bye.

We had two cracking nights at Grimsborgir, we were a bit apprehensive due to the (unfair) review in the Lonely Planet guide. Our fears were totally unfounded, we had a huge 4 bed bungalow, we phoned ahead on the first night & the hot tub was full & steaming on our arrival, wonderful after a days driving & sightseeing. The second night there was a complete power failure so everything was candlelight in the restaurant for the hour or so it took to fix. Hotel team totally professional and the added ambiance of candles made the evening all the better, so much so that when the power came back on we switched the lights off to remain in candlelight. Big advantage for our bungalow was the lounge facing North West enabling watching the Northern Lights from the comfort of a cosy room & comfortable armchair. Would highly recommend to anyone wishing for a higher end exclusive experience, only comment is the expense of food & drink but no more expensive here than anywhere else in Iceland - thanks for a great time, we all really enjoyed it.

Booked a room but got upgraded to a 4 bedroom guesthouse! The house was very clean and the furnishings were modern (mostly IKEA) and new. House included a kitchen and livingroom with working fireplace. It was a very comfortable stay and well exceeded my expectations. There's also a hot tub outside. The breakfast buffet was great. Close drive to Golden Circle sites such as Gullfoss, Geysir, etc. I would recommend staying here over a smaller hotel room in Reykjavík if you're with a family and renting a car.

It’s new, bright, clean, comfortable, and spacious, with the friendliest staff. But the best part is the dining room, breakfast at the dining room to be exact. What a perfect setting! Bathroom was huge but could use brighter lights. You have a little sitting area, like a little porch, outside the sliding door from the room. Out the front door of the building down the corridor you can take one of the many hot tubs. The room itself was floor heated and the space made it felt more like a modern cabin than a room. I think it is difficult to do any better than this around that area. If I were spending a few days exploring the Golden Circle, I would definitely stay here, beats staying in Reykjavik.

Grimsborgir is a fantastic stop. We were pleasantly surprised when they gave us a free upgrade to a 4 bedroom apartment/guesthouse. The apartment was beautiful and the service was personable. It was one of our favorite places on our 10 day trip around Iceland. We would recommend Grimsborgir to any Icelandic travelers.
