This hotel is not currently in any of the guidebooks as it was opened around two years ago. I booked it because it had such good reviews on this site, because the photos looked nice and because in a tour of iceland involving lots of different hotels, I thought it would be a pleasant change to have a few days in a self-catering, self-contained bungalow. I dared to hope that it would be a bit nicer than the hotels that we stayed in which were the standard, clean, comfortable, but not terribly exciting hotels that are on offer in Iceland. It was actually so far above my expectations that I found it difficult to believe. It is situated just outside Selfoss, which is a fairly non- descript town, but it is within easy driving distance of Rekjavik and many of the top tourist sights like Gulfoss, Geysir, Pingvellir National Park, etc . As we booked late we had the only bungalow still available, bungalow 3 which sleeps 7. There were 4 of us, 2 adults and 2 children. It was enormous, beautifully decorated and fantastically clean. It had a large fully fitted kitchen and a lovely big bathroom, a dining area and three separate sitting areas, one with flat screen TV and DVD. A decking terrace surrounded it with a lovely clean hot tub for use at any time (there are instructions in the house for which button to press to fill it up and the owner showed us how to do it on our arrival). We used it in the evenings and it was weirdly wonderful to sit on our private terrace in a hot tub with a drink, looking out over the amazing scenery. It had outside tables and chairs and a lovely clean gas barbecue. It was easy to self-cater as the fabulous kitchen was quite well equipped with dishes and cutlery and there were a couple of supermarkets 10 mins drive away in Selfoss, but a fantastic buffet breakfast in the hotel's lovely restaurant next door (the restaurant and reception are in a separate bungalow) each morning was actually included in the price of the bungalow. We also ate in the restaurant one night and it was a lovely meal. It was easily the best place we stayed in Iceland by some significant margin and is actually right up there with the nicest places we have ever stayed anywhere. Ours was the biggest bungalow they have, but I believe most sleep 4 and there are a couple of studios that presumably sleep less. Cannot recommend this place highly enough.

We were given Cottage No 1 & it was beautiful. I want to live there! I was gutted that it was our last night - we saved the best until last.
I wish we had realised that it was a fully equiped cottage that we were to stay in as it would have been lovely to have a barbeque & stay in. We had just been expecting a room.
We ate in the restaurant which is housed in a seperate building a few minutes walk away. The food was good but rather expensive, as was the wine.
Only niggle was that the accommodation was advertised per person in euros. Their conversion rate is rather weighted in their favour!

Room Tip: Stay for as long as you can afford! Did I mention the hot tub?

We were booked here by a travel operator and weren't sure what to expect. We were amazed!

We were surely upgraded as we had a house that easily slept 6 for just three of us. A gorgeous kitchen, living area, TV area, an enormous bathroom, four bedrooms, a huge deck with a grill and table and chairs and a hot tub. Everything was very nice; clean design and well done, with an amazing view. Sadly, our hot tub wasn't full of water and we weren't there long enough to bother asking to have it filled.

We had dinner at the restaurant and it was good. Not outstanding but certainly much better than other meals in Iceland. Breakfast though was fantastic. Real coffee, great bread and lots of other choices. Very cozy and friendly on the chilly morning.

I highly recommend staying here. We only stayed one night because we were traveling around Iceland trying to see as much as possible. In hindsight, it would have been better to have stayed here two or three nights and hiked around the park (Pingvellir) more and explored the area.

A great alternative to a hotel; we were very comfortable and it was nice to have space and a great view. It would be lots of fun with a big bunch of friends to just hang out, cook and hike for a few days in the summer or winter.

Dear guests from France,
thank you for your great review, we appreciate it.
We are happy that you have enjoyed your stay with us and we are glad that you were pleased with the upgrade. The instructions for the hot tub were written in the guest handbook in your apartment, we are sorry you didn´t see those and didn´t ask for assistance and therefore couldn´t use your tub. Hopefully, your stay was nice anyway.

We recently stayed at this wonderful place and were pleasantly surprised by their accommodations. The 3 bedroom house was so spacious, clean and very comfortable. Perfect for families, it felt like home. It had a jacuzzi in the back patio with great views. The food was amazing and the service first class. We highly recommend it!

We knew that we were booked into an apartment, rather than just a hotel room, for a single night during our grand tour of Iceland, but the reality was overwhelming. Olaf greeted us warmly, and took us personally to the apartment which would have accommodated us if we had been a family of six or seven, rather than just a couple. There was a fully equipped kitchen, an elegant dining room with table laid, a lounge and spacious bedrooms. The bathroom was huge and everything was spotlessly clean and in good repair. Decking extended around three sides of the building, and there was a hot tub on decking at the back. This Olaf filled for us, and after a really excellent meal in the restaurant we were able to go back to the house and enjoy a summer evening in the warm water, watching the whimbrels wheel overhead.
We could happily have stayed here for many days, and used it as a base for exploring southern Iceland. As it was, we had an itinerary to hold to, but it was a wrench to leave the next morning. It's in a league of its own compared to all the other places we stayed in Iceland, and some of those get five stars from me. Grimsborgir deserves six.

We stayed here for 3 nights in july to celebrate our 1 year anniversary. The accommodation was superb ( the first thing we did on arrival was to start staking photos!) and had unvelievable views. Set in an idyllic location, we wanted to stay forever!

Breakfast was great but dinner was out of this world! We can highly recommend the lamb and the lobster, which were exquisite!
Service was impeccable at all times.

Only small negative would have to be the hot tub which was 'shared' between 2 apartments. However, it was located on our neighbours' decking right next to their table and chairs. Always felt like we had to wait for them to go out to use it. And when the hot tub was turned on it made a huge noise in the apartment which did disturb us.

Dear guests,
thank you for your nice review!
We are happy that you have enjoyed your stay at Hotel Grimsborgir and the food at our restaurant. We are sorry to hear that the hot tub caused noise and some inconveniences. Unfortunately, we are not able at this point to install two hot tubs at the house you stayed in, but we are working on it and hope that in the future our guests will also be able to access a private hot tub in those houses.
Best regards from Iceland,
Christiane

The end of our trip to Iceland was very sad, but this was the perfect place to be. We LOVED the apartment we stayed in (#15 - the bigger side). It was absolutely beautiful and clean. It felt more like a house than an apartment. It is bright and roomy.

The restaurant on the premises has delicious roasted lamb. And the breakfast is excellent. There is a good assortment of items and the coffee is among the best.

I would love to have a sink like the one in the bathroom here. It was so big and nice.

The staff was friendly and accommodating. We arrived at 9:30pm. The restaurant closes at 10pm so they sat us down quickly and let us order. The owner waited until we were finished eating and then took us to our apartment. We were traveling with young children and that made such a huge difference for us that they served us dinner so late and then waited to check us in.

Room Tip: We stayed in number 15 and thought it was wonderful.
