The best beds of our trip in Iceland. The hot pool is awesome at night under the stars. This is not a cheap place and the room is quite small if you re 3 to sleep in but staying in night at ION definitely worth it.

ION's breakfast is the best we had in Iceland.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the left side of the hotel, you ll get a view without electric plant

We stayed at the Ion Hotel because of a one-paragraph story in National Geographhic Traveler about great places to watch the Norhern Lights. What a disappointment. Cheaply constructed. In the first room we were assigned, half the lights did not work. There was no maintenance person, so they moved to us anouther room but the heat did not work (not great in Iceland in December), so we went to another room and the heat did not work in lthat room either. So we went back to the room with half the lights out because at least the heat worked. One has the sense that this hotel was built quickly and cheaply. Restaurant was very expensive but had good food. Nice outdoor heated sitting pool. Too bad but not a particularly good hotel.

A truly special location and getting here needs to be part of the adventure. It's truly a special spot on the planet and I wish we'd been here longer. We were only passing through and stayed just one night on our trek around Iceland.

The hotel was clearly busy but it never felt it - it was quite, private and very tranquil feeling. The gorgeous modern interiors were lovely and the beds were very comfortable. The room itself was quite small and would have felt cramped if you were spending a while in it. But for only a night, it was quite comfortable. The showers could also use some work - water splashes everywhere and we set off the fire alarms with the steam!!!

Dinner in the restaurant was very, very good and it was only 9:30 when we were notified by the staff that the northern lights were in full swing. We got an outstanding show from the parking lot and from the Northern Lights Bar (which is aptly named).

Truly a very nice place to tuck in for a bit of R&R. Wish we could have stayed there longer!

Ion hotel was an excellent stay, the room had a great bed and fantastic shower. The views/hiking are great. The outdoor hot pool is amazing at night time to watch the stars, and provides the backdrop for a nice romantic evening. Excellent restaurant with some of the best fish I've eaten. This is not a cheap place, however worth spending a little extra for the luxurious facilities.

I think what I would say about the ion is that it was an interesting design - the northern lights bar is gorgeous but if there was a large group there it would be hard to get a seat. The room was small but adequate though a touch cold and smelly as there is a geothermal power station nearby lending a distinct whiff of sulphur in the air but you get used to that. The breakfast was adequate and we had a dinner there that was delicious though the dining room is fairly basic and not the most prepossessing to sit in. I think the service needs a definite improvement not up to the standard of other hotels we stayed in - checking out was a nightmare as they had left out two drinks and I pointed this out only to end up in a situation where four drinks were added then three and eventually after half an hour the right number of drinks. . However it location on thingvellir close to the golden circle and out of Reykjavik was great.
