Owner description: Laugarvatn Fontana is composed of a series of interconnected baths and steam rooms that complement each other to create a healthy, natural and unique spa experience.Three steam rooms, collectively called GUFAN, have been built over a natural hot spring that has been used since 1929. The temperature of the steam varies depending on the temperature of the hot spring and weather, usually between 40°C (104°F) and 50°C (122°F). Humidity is very high in the steam room cabins. Grids in the floor of the steam rooms allow guests to hear and smell the boiling natural hot spring underneath, creating a natural and totally unique experience.Next to the steam room is YLUR, a Finnish-style sauna. The temperature is between 80°C (176°F) and 90°C (194°F), with a lower humidity than the steam room having a big window facing the lake of Laugarvatn. LAUGA, SÆLA, and VISKA are interconnected outdoor mineral baths that vary in depth, size and temperature. Some areas are suitable for relaxation and others offer space for movement and playfull moments. Stone artwork made by Icelandic artist, Erla Thórarinsdóttir, enhance each visitor’s experience. VISKA, the hot tub, is built at a slightly higher level than the other baths, providing a panoramic view of the beautiful surroundings while the healthy water nourishes both body and soul.Completing the ensemble are VATNIÐ and STRÖNDIN — the lake and the beach. Visitors will reach VATNIÐ through a gate. STRÖNDIN has warm black sand, which has been shown to be beneficial for those suffering from arthritis and other joint illnesses. VATNIÐ provides an opportunity to cool down between visits to GUFAN and YLUR, a temperature shift that is both healthy and strengthening

Visit was part of the Golden Circle tour. It was a great way to end the day. The staff first showed us how they baked bread just by burying it in the ground. That was really cool. Running half naked out into the cold and into the water made the warm pools that much more gratifying.
Best parts:
1. Nature pool with rocks. It is very warm.
2. Three saunas with varying temperatures.
3. The view of the mountains and the lake.
Facilities were nice. Staff friendly. I was there on a Wednesday afternoon and the only people there were from my tour group. That made the experience very enjoyable. I prefer this place to the Blue Lagoon.

Dear Jigga_JZ

Thanks for the feedback, we love collecting good feedbacks!
According to your writing, it seems like you joined a tour with Reykjavík Excursions who visit us twice a day, once in a connection with their Golden Circle tour and then the new tour where the tour starts with a visit with us before hunting for the Northern Lights.

We always greet guests from the Golden Circle tour by taking them down to the boiling shore of the lake, giving them the change to taste rye bread that has been in the making of our geothermal bakery for the last 24 hours (from yesterday's tour). This we serve with Icelandic butter which is known to be creamy and add good flavor to the popular bread. With a taste from the ground, you are greeted by the various temperate pools.

We can complete your day. We can complete your Golden Circle.

This was a relaxing interlude in a hectic day of tours. It was fun to try the different spas with the varying heat. Wish the pools were bigger. The saunas with the different temperatures was a whoa experience. The hottest one it felt difficult to breath, much less stay for long.

Dear chris_explorer

Thanks for giving you the time to write us your reply. We entire staff appreciates the positive feedback from a Top Contributor to this online society of travelers.

The biggest "pool" is of course our lake, offering almost endless amount of water to explore in footsteps of the settlers of Iceland who took up on the bathing at Laugarvatn. Chris_explorer, please come back in the future, we are sure to have added more pools and other services to our facilities by then.

Best wishes from us at Laugarvatn, we are stretching out after a long day at work - under a sky of Northern Lights. Come visit again soon!

Compared to the Blue Lagoon this spa is small but we found it very relaxing. The resort is not very big but there are several pools are varying temperature, our favourite was the very warm natural looking pool with the rocks covered in algae.

We visited mid week for 2 hrs and apart from 20 minutes we were the only people in the pools which made it very special however if it was to get busy I can imagine it getting difficult finding a quite space to relax. The natural sauna was very nice and it was great listening to the water making lots of noise as it was boiling and bubbling.

There is access to lake and the black sand but it would seem this also has public access so don't be surprised if you see people walking past. I would recommend a visit and would go mid week as the staff said it gets busy at the weekend.

Nice quiet little spa with several hot pools to relax in. Try the geothermally baked bread, its fantastic! Staff is very warm and friendly. There were no private shower stalls. Not an issue for me, but may be for some people. Great view of the surroundings, only slightly hindered by a wire fence. A much different experience than the Blue Lagoon. Overall, a very nice place to visit while touring the Golden Circle.

Dear G W

Thanks for your feedback.
When writing this reply to you, I remember that we have some fresh pot of geothermal bread out in our hot spring. I am about to go out to get a fresh pot for the staff before we start the day. There is simply nothing better than freshly baked bread with loads of butter and a slice of smoked trout from our lake.

We are always improving our facilities, including fences and other measure to keep you secure, but still being able to enjoy the bountiful view. We agree on the matter we are ideal to complete the Golden Circle geothermal experience, what better way to finish it by bathing on top of a hot spring after seeing one spout at Geysir?

Safe travels, be inspired.

I love this place. It not just very good, its exellent. I will give this place 4 points, only because I believe its little bit too expensive. I believe that there would have come much more people if it was just a little bit cheaper, and the spa would make more money on that, but that is just my opinion, still I have to say that even its expensive its still a responible price :) I have been in Laugarvatn 3 times, and I think its exellent to stay in this village, and every time I come to Laugarvatn, I go and visit fontana many days the week that I am stay i Laugarvatn. I will come back here in future many times, its relaxing, natural, and the staff is so frendly :) It is absolutly worth to visit :)

Dear NorwegianTourist1

Thanks for your feedback. We are sorry to hear that we are on the more expensive side but we are even more happy to hear that we deliver the service that you expect! For frequent visitors like you seem to be, you can buy a year pass, 3 month pass, winter pass or simply a 10 visit pass. Maybe that is something you should look into next time you pay us a visit?

Being one of our regulars, have you made it to our 14:30 (2:30pm) geothermal bakery tour with a tasting of freshly baked bread?

We are worth the visit, that is true - you seem to be a worthy client!
