My friend and I drove up the side of a mountain and saw a teeny little square. We'd been driving all day and we couldn't believe this tiny square was where we were spending the next two nights. It was absolutely gorgeous inside, and the food was the best we had in Iceland, hands down. Because it's such a remote location, we requested dinner one night. The other travelers ate with us, and it was a wonderful opportunity to meet people from around the world. The food was absolutely amazing, although it was expensive (about $78 USD per person without alcohol) but it was worth it, because we hadn't eaten at many expensive restaurants on our trip. It was a four course meal-- incredible appetizers, authentic Icelandic food and recipes specific to the hostel owner as well, and skyr pudding for dessert. The room was adorable and so comfortable. This was the best hostel we stayed at in all of Iceland. The remote location, surrounded by lava fields and mountains and sheep, made it homey and interesting at the same time. The decor was so unique and we loved our room. I would recommend this place to anyone, and I'd also recommend having dinner there. It's expensive, but you won't forget the meal. There is a beautiful dog living at the hostel, so you should like animals if you stay there!

Room Tip: I would choose a room in the separate building out back for more privacy. You can use the mail house...

If what you want from a place to stay is a palatial room within which to mope, then this is not the place for you. The rooms are small and mostly full of bed, but that is not the point. You get to use the rest of the house which has a lovely sun room and a large dining area and kitchen. The owners are great hosts, personable and interesting without being intrusive or forcing jollity on everyone. The food was fabulous, easily the best and most characterful we had in Iceland.

We didn't realize that the guest house is a little out of the road. After a few calls we knew where to go and how to get there and all was fine.
We found a stunning few, really friendly and releaxed people in a nice quite area. As we came in late we didn't participate in the dinner but got especially for us grilled lamb. Thank you for that again! It was amazing too!
We stayed in the lower house a little off the main house in a room with small windows out to the river. No 5* room but good enough for one night. The staff was really very friendly and answered all of our questions, translated Icelandic song texts for us and gave us hints how to go on with our trip! We will be back!

Of all twelve guesthouses on our trip Hrifunes was easily the one that stood out overwhelming us.

Sure, the location on small hills overlooking a plain of lava fields and the outwash of Kúðafljót river, far from any village, is great. Sure, the veranda / living room has comfortable couches to hang around and enjoy the view through the big windows. Sure, the guesthouse is decorated with a lot of love to detail, so it looks very cozy (in particular the dining room / kitchen). Sure, dinner and breakfast are tasty.
Sure, there are more such reasons to like this place. But what really makes it so special is that you, the other guests and the owner(s) almost feel like a family.

I'm not a fan of bed&breakfasts where you eat in the owners' family kitchen where you sometimes feel like invaders. Don't get me wrong. It's absolutely not like this.
Here you quickly feel like you have been there for a long time and you belong there.

It is usual in the evenings that the guests gather in the living room, enjoy their appetizers and the evening sun before proceeding to the main course of dinner in the next room - which at the same time houses the kitchen where everything is freshly prepared. All guests sit at one table and share their Iceland experiences, staying there until well after dessert.
You should really join this experience when you stay here - there is anyway no restaurant anywhere close and at least in the main building the kitchen is used for preparing dinner (the other building seems to have a kitchen for guests, but it would be a mistake to miss common dinner).
Don't arrive too late, though: in our case the main course started around 8 pm.
I don't want to reduce the experience to a special dinner, this is just one detail.

Two technical notes: don't confuse this "Hrifunes Guesthouse" with "Hrifunes House" which seems to be a different place (just check the pictures to be sure). And at least in our room ("Family Room" in the main house) there was no sink/washing basin - no issue, I just like to know in advance, so I write it here for others.

Price was a bit above average compared to the other guesthouses we stayed at, but the experience was so much better that Hrifunes Guesthouse was worth every cent. Thanks for everything, and also thanks for the nice late-night chat with Hadda.
I really wish we'd stayed for more than just one night.

So this is a wholehearted recommendation to stay at this place.

Room Tip: There seems to be the main building and a different building a bit down the hill. Main building has...

Can't understand the previous rating. We've been there end of August 2012 and it was a amazing experience to stay in this cosy and friendly home. We decided to stay an additional night due to the atmosphere. It is really worth going there.

We stayed just one night in the lower buikding but I would recommend up to three nights. The rooms are wonderful, the beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are very modern. The piece de resistance is the warm service and the excellent food. Our dinner was goose breast and lamb with many sides, and a delicious dessert with fresh berries. If you are visiting this region of Iceland - and you should - this is the place to stay for a great Iceland experience.

This is an oasis that needs to be shared,,,,
My boyfriend and I stayed here and the place was a home from home, the people who run the guesthouse are warm and friendly and will help however they can to make your holiday what you want..

The guesthouse is a lovely place to have a relaxing holiday and unwind but you can also hire a car and see Iceland and have a based to feel at home in,,

What ever type of holiday you are looking for I would highly recommend this home from home...
