We were staying at the hotel Frost and Fire so we were a "captive audience" for dinner. Reading previous reviews we had high expectations. Prices here are similar to Reykjavik restaurant prices and we found the quality was not on a par. The dishes did not display a chef's skill and it is definitely not fine dining. We did share a very reasonably priced Chianti red wine and our waiter was charming and friendly.

The food is excellent and prices reasonable. It is overlooking the river valley and as we were staying on site that was an added bonus.

The restaurant is part of the Frost and Fire Guest House. The food - we had the trout and cod - was out of this world delicious. Really nice big portions and superbly cooked. Really deserves 5 stars and was a wonderful meal. A little too expensive though given we had arguably local produce.

Food in Iceland is expensive, but this wasn't too bad and was worth every penny. We ate here two nights and both nights the food was superb.

Attached to the also-charming "Frost and Fire" hotel/guesthouse, the Varma is a cozy, but upscale, restaurant that exudes Icelandic authenticity. Faced with the challenge of dealing with a party of up to twenty diners, the staff was willing and able to accommodate the needs of vegetarians, and even offered choices of appetizer, entree and dessert. Our party dined here twice, and the fare was superbly executed, presented with elan and sufficiently filling and tasty.

My choice the first night was for the "Taste of Iceland" appetizer platter, which included peat-smoked trout, lamb head cheese, sheep's liver pate and marinated foal. This was accompanied by a lovely blueberry sauce. The main course was a sumptuous helping of wonderful Icelandic lamb (a must for anyone who's never eaten it before!), served on a bed of fluffy mashed sweet potatoes and layered with green beans. A zesty slaw was served on the side. For dessert I had the "Chocolate Dream." Icelanders love their sweets, and this was a warm helping of chocolate brownie topped with fresh whipped cream and a strawberry garnish. Lovely!

The second night's appetizer was a puff pastry stuffed with shrimps and scallops in a delicate cream sauce. The entree was trout on a couscous bed with a side of salad and feta cheese. Trout is plentiful in Iceland, and is also not to be missed. Dessert was an apple crumble, and like everything else, was served warm and fresh.

Did I mention the bread? A constant supply of fresh baked bread was brought to the table. It was lightly salted, as one might find on a pretzel. The dips differed over the nights: the first night was a balsamic reduction and the second a tomato based puree.

As guests of the hotel, we also enjoyed breakfast at Varma, and one may cook their own eggs in the steam vents just outside. Varma provides egg baskets on a rope -- one just submerges the basket in the steam and minutes later, your cooked eggs are ready! The restaurant also serves the standard Icelandic fare of meats, cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, wonderful coffee, juice and home-baked brown bread, also cooked in the natural steam ovens. Heaven!
