Fantastic restaurant!

Review of Hotel Ork
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 22, 2017
We didn't stay here but decided to go for dinner because we didn't like restaurant Varma and the service at Frost and Fire was not great. This was one of our favorite meals in Iceland and not as expensive as others! They have a happy hour which will save on drinks. My son had the burger and loved it I had salmon which was great. Also nice vegetarian options.

Spent 2 nights here. Food was excellent at the attached restaurant Hver. The game room had table tennis, pool and chess which my children enjoyed very much. The water slides were "awesome" according to my kids. My wife and I enjoyed the hotter of the 2 hot tubs and met some very nice folks from France and the UK. Id highly recommend this hotel.

So I came here with my school and the conditions here are appalling, the staff are rude and scarcely available, and the food is sub par at best.
As we arrived at the front we were greeted with a very fancy lobby where the only option to enter was the revolving door which 23 of us had to use at once which as you can imagine went well. Immediately after we passed the main lobby we were met with outdated and worn carpets that gave the feel of a 70s B&B. We barely used the lift but it was straight out of a horror film.
When we got to our room we had to use a punchcard type system which shows how outdated the hotel was and as we entered a 17 year old & two 18 year old lads sharing one twin room. There was barely a gap between my bed and my roommates and I was practically on top of the window.
The bathroom was disgusting the shower curtains were obviously ancient and the bathtub was broken and worn, the toilet leaked at least once everyday and when we complained to reception they told us they were already aware but still hadn't fixed it. I felt more dirty after showering than I did going in.
The food wasn't horrible and it wasn't amazing it was best described as 'meh' the breakfast was basic, porridge, cereal, toast and sandwiches although I made the mistake of having a caramel type yoghurty milk which was absolutely revolting. Each night for dinner we had a different thing none of which was Icelandic and whilst it was mildly tasty, the portion sizes were pitiful and left you still hungry at the end.
I'd say the saving grace was the recreation room where there was a table tennis table and a pool table as well as lots of chairs and tables. These managed to keep us entertained during the trip however even these where worn out and old.
Overall I would not recommend coming to this hotel and I am never planning to return again.

If you are thirsting for a trip back to the 70's at a place that is unmaintained partially clean with casually poor service. This one is for you.
They seem to have spent a lot of money and effort on the foyer and their logo's but forgot they are a hotel and not a stable.
Prepare to have the mood set after your shower with the entire room turns into dog pee aroma therapy, and the ensuing hunt for the odour.
The music is full volume till 2am and be sure the windows will not block a single note. Some good window side fights in the car park below. While drunk people yell and honk their horns to lull you to sleep.
Making a call to the front desk is a Russian roulette sort of thing where if they answer and that is a definite IF, you will wish they hadn't, because they definitely cannot be bothered to help.
They also have some lovely dungeon rooms in the basement for the particularly unlucky guests. Luckily we were on the top floor so we took the cadaver sized elevator with its suitcase faded carpet up and as we entered the room we wished we hadn't.
The best thing about this place was leaving it and going to an incredible local greenhouse eatery around the corner.
I do not know why Icelandair work with these people but they should definitely reconsider as every other hotel we stayed at was top notch.
Just avoid this place if you have a choice.

      Dear Raphael k,

Thank you for taking time to share your feedback.

We are disappointed to read about your experience with your stay and we do apologize that we failed to meet your expectations on this occasion. Your feedback is extremely valuable to us, as we strive to improve with each and every stay.

Guests often ask why the hot water smells of sulphur, which is due to the geothermal origins of the hot water. The familiar smell of sulphur is particularly strong in Hveragerði. We hope that you had the opportunity to walk around the well-marked hiking paths as well as visiting the geothermal park, it is indeed a precious gem.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the noise from the people outside the hotel, we can assure you that your comments regarding this matter aren't going unheard.

We hope that we have the pleasure of welcoming you back again to us in the near future where we hope to regain your faith in the facilities and the service that we are known for.

      Sincerely,
      hótel Örk crew

This hotel is horrible, dirty and loud. Avoid.

The rooms were dirty and smelly with old carpets all around the floor that looked like they had been there for decades and smelled the part.
During the night we barely slept as there was so much noice and fuss all around partly because all these school groups apparently are using this hotel and partly because there was some party going on there too.
Members of our group whose rooms were facing the pool barely got some sleep.

The stuff was not really helpful and seemed like they didn't care at all about complaints.

Finally in the morning, the breakfast was cheaply made, coffee was bad, the bread was stale and the juices came out of machines and tasted like they were overloaded with sugar.

Overall a horrible stay. Wouldn't recommend.

      Dear katerina M,

Thank you for taking the time to review hótel Örk. We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience during your stay and we take it very seriously as we always aim to improve our service and customer experience.

The smell you are describing, is most likely of the natural occurrence which is the sulphur gas. Hveragerði is situated on a site that has high levels of geothermal activity and it has an eggy smell to it. We are sorry if it was an unpleasant odor.

We have some school groups coming to us and most of them are well behaved kids with a presentable and responsible teacher. We do apologize for the inconvenience caused by the noise from them.

We are disappointed to know that the selection at breakfast was not what you expected. We appreciate the point you have brought to our attention and we will try to find ways to improve.

Once again we are sorry that we failed to meet your expectations on this occasion and we hope that you will give us the opportunity to welcome you back to in the near future.

      Kind regards,

Did a tour with Iceland Travel and ended up staying here for one night.

Smelly service--- The worker at the front desk was very unfriendly. I simply asked about how to turn on the TV because pushing the power button did nothing. I was met with attitude! I also asked how to call the front desk as the phone only has 3 buttons all in Icelandic. He told me "read the directions on the phone." THERE WERE NO DIRECTIONS OR BOOK TO FIND ANYWHERE IN THE ROOM.

The room--- I was on the first floor (below the lobby) and you could hear every single footstep. There was a high school group also staying at this hotel and playing tag. Running nonstop at 2100-2300!

Would NEVER stay at this hotel again.
