“Great retreat”
Reviewed August 4, 2013

We arrived very late for check-in (well after midnight) as our plane arrived late and the journey from Reykjavik airport to Frost & Fire was approx 1.5hrs by car, but we were welcomed with a lovely smile and immediately shown to our room. A delightful twin room with private bathroom. Being in Iceland even at that time it was still very light so we were able to see the stunning view from our balcony over the river and lava mountains and a number of small theothermal steam vents dotted all around. Our room was also just a few paces away from two thermal outdoor pools. The room was very comfortable with ample storage space and a settee - the balcony also had a table and chairs, and internet connection was there immediately. Breakfast was included in our package and we were invited to boil our eggs ourselves outside in one of the open small geysers. There was plenty choice for breakfast including delicious homebaked bread and jam. The terrain around there was extremely rough - catering more for walkers and backpackers so good walking shoes are important. A car is also a must unless you prefer to stay there as a retreat and avail of the peace and tranquility. Staff were extremely friendly and accommodating making our stay there a very pleasant and memorable first time impression of Icelandic hospitality.

We arrived to the Frost and Fire Guest House at almost 1am the night we arrived in Iceland. The receptionist was awake to welcome us and even took the time to show us the geothermal sauna. We enjoyed a nice dip in the warm geothermal pool before heading to bed in our spacious room. Breakfast was simple and delicious. We were at Frost and Fire Guest House very briefly but we enjoyed this idyllic little gem at the bend in the river! A great introduction to Icelandic hospitality.

We stayed here for one night on a trip around Iceland. Our room had a balcony looking out over a stream that runs through a geothermal valley. On the hillside across the stream we could see steam vents.

The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was good. Everything was clean. I found the swimming pool to be too hot for comfort, but the hot tub was lovely for a relaxing end to the day. And they provide robes, so if the air is cool when you get out of the hot tub, you have something to put on.

Breakfast was good, with bread baked in a geothermal bakery. The closest description I can think of is "Boston brown bread." It was lovely slathered with butter! We had a delicious dinner in the restaurant, too.

If we ever return to Iceland, we'll definitely stay in this hotel again.

Dear Guest.

Thank you so much for your kind review.
We are very glad that you enjoyed your stay. The swimming pool is heated by steam so sometimes it can be more like a big hot tub.
The brown bread "Rúgbrauð" is cooked in our natural hot spring for 12 HRS overnight and is as you say delicious when it is steaming new with butter.
We hope you will visit us again soon and wish you a pleasant winter.

I have stayed here twice: in high summer season and in early autumn- note there are two separate buildings: the rooms attached to the main building are older (where breakfast is served) we were given a shabby room in much need of an update all around- having been here before I immediately asked to be move to one of the the other rooms in the newer building beyond the geothermal tubs. These rooms are laid out in a staggered fashion so that one feels that you are in a private cabin, each with its own small balcony overlooking the glacial stream with a sloping hill ascending on the other side of the stream; geothermal steam rises from holes and cracks all along the hill making for a very dramatic, moody and beautiful impression. In summer, cows wander by and riders on horseback on the trail at the top of the hill. The rooms are decent in size- a lack of storage space to hang clothing but other than that, clean functional a cheerful; bathroom with heated floors. I have stayed here with a group and also with my partner- I wouldn't recommend staying for more than two days for a solo traveler- there's little to do in off season if one is alone and it may feel a bit lonesome- but its great for couples: enjoy the geothermal tubs, the steam room is a bit craggy, a bit too cave like for my taste (an overall sensation of it being dirty?).
Breakfast in high summer season was much better than during the off season. I would stay here again as it has in an ineffable charm. One note for American travelers regarding customer service in Iceland: don't expect US Standard fawning, smiling, fake-cheery service and interaction with staff - this is true in almost every place i have stayed, dined and visited (with the exception of a wonderful caretaker at the Icelandic Folk Museum); when it comes to hotel and restaurant service throughout Iceland (i have visited many times); staff members seem downright rude at first impression to the un-initated. Don't let this put you off: talk to people and eventually you will realize like most Scandinavian and Nordic cultures that are more interior/introspective in nature, when dealing with 'strangers' it is common to experience a bit of frosty distance - it's a cultural difference that makes for interesting study; especially when one comes from backgrounds where service can seem cloyingly fawning.
That said: enjoy. Don't let the gruff check in/out process put you off, settle in and enjoy.

Room Tip: ask for a room in the newer building (to the left of the geo-tub at the entrance).

Dear Guest.
Thank you for your kind review.
We are very pleased that you liked you stay at Frost and Fire.

Our natural steam room is very clean but since we use the steam straight from the ground, it is very rich of silica and other minerals. It makes the steam room look a little cave-like, and we like to keep it that way.
Our staff is known for being very welcoming and it our ambition to make everyone feel welcome at our Hotel. I hope you had the same experience.

We wish you all the best and thank you for your visit which hopefully wont be the last.

Best regards

We ended up here by accident following an over booking in another hotel. What a fab place! Stunning food, friendly staff, lovely room.

It's a great little walk into the hills at the back to see the hot springs.

The hot tubs by the river are pretty cool too!

Stayed here as part of a large wedding party so our group took over the whole hotel which was nice!

The facilities are beautiful- located right next to a river with hot tubs that overlook it. The river is icy cold even in summer so you can't swim in it, but the hot tubs are a great alternative! The water in the hot tubs are just lukewarm and could have been warmer.

The rooms themselves are very simple- very small, but adequate. The bathrooms are also tiny.

The restaurant was great with a chef that is one of the best in Iceland. Again, we were there as part of a pre-arranged wedding group so we have a prefixe tasting menu which was delicious! Can't comment on their usual dinner options, but hopefully it's just as good! It's also a lot of fun to boil your own eggs in the ground in the morning, but this can take awhile (10-12 minutes) so leave yourself time!

The restaurant and the hot tubs are the highlights.

We stayed two nights here and are glad we chose this place to stay. The location is very nice and it was nice to stay out of the city but be close enough to a town. The room was minimalist, not what we are used to but then again we are not always in Iceland. As I got out of the car, the smell of the hot springs was all around but noticed it less and less soon enough. The service was kind, and made you feel welcomed and them easily accessible. The bedding is Icelandic I guess, big single blankets then because of the long summer days, they have a dark curtain for the windows but the light was full in the sky windows, which are likely pretty cool during the winter months.

Here’s a couple thoughts on our stay.

-The natural steam room was so much better than a regular spa steam room. Here the steam just keeps coming out and the hot tubs are hot but there are no air jets. It’s a hot tub.

- We dined at their restaurant, I had the trout and my wife the seafood stew and both were very good. Wine list is minimal, it’s a small place. Ask about the local sampler appetizer, we did and enjoyed the local flavors and the service. There's a decent breakfast served in the morning as well.

-We searched grocery stores on our way out and found no wine. There is a wine store right at the beginning of the street the hotel is on, once you turn off the main toad. There is a couple decent dining options in town as well.

-We took a walk on the hill behind the hotel it’s a pretty area.
The sum of all this is why we liked this place, while not a five start resort, they are what they advertise. There is a town nearby and the local area is beautiful. Have fun.

Dear Guest
Thank you for your kind review and we are also glad that you stayed here with us.
It is good for coming guests to have such a good overview of the things that you mentioned in your review. Wine is only sold in special wine stores in Iceland (run by the state) and they are closed on Sundays. They are usually located by the gas station N1 on the country side.

As you mention rightfully we are not a 5 star hotel, could be rated 4 star, but we like to invite our guests to something unique, close to the nature and to provide a home like welcoming feeling in our resort. Mud baths are in the pipeline and more that the nature around has to offer.

We thank you for choosing Frost and Fire hotel and hope you will visit us again one day.

Best regards
