“Does the job”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2014

I stayed here one night, with my husband. The hotel is a little dated and worn, but ok. The staff were very charming and friendly, which was a bonus.
We had a room in the main building. It was fairly small and dark, but everything was neat and clean. The bed was comfortable and the furniture, while minimal, was in good condition.
The bathroom was a very small wet room, nothing flash, but squeaky clean and had a well lit mirror.
There was an electric jug and a sparse supply of teabags in the room.
Internet connection was unreliable and needs an upgrade.
Breakfast was good.
We ate our evening meal in the restaurant. It was excellent, but pricey.
Overall, not a bad place to stay.

Our stop here was án overall pleasant one. The inside has some kind of neat details, like where you walk down the hall to your room, it's all wood and dimly lit with stained glass at one end. I liked the style, others may not. The rooms were mainly wood and decently decorated. The bathroom was án okay size, but a bit disappointing, as there is a shower curtain around the shower area with a little lip in the floor to keep the water in that area, but you end up with water all over the floor, plus there are no towel racks, just little knobs to hang them. We did end up eating dinner here, bóth getting the catch of the day, which was salmon. It was well prepared and came with soup and bread and tea or coffee, as well as potatoes as the side. Overall it was all good. Breakfast was okay, but they could have used a few more options, as there were not too many to choose from. The staff was very friendly and the location is nice. Overall it was a decent stay, and we would stay there again. I would give three and a hálf stars, but i don't have that option!

The entrance (and decked area) of the hotel are quite charming and "olde-world", however the room didn't quite live up these first impressions. It was very dark, very dated and quite small. Although there was a kettle in the room the tea/coffee supplies were quite haphazard. The bathroom (wet-room style) was fine. wifi in the room was intermittent. We had no interesting view from our room, just towards the back of other buildings. Dinner was fine, nothing exceptional or memorable. Breakfast was also ok, with a decent choice.

I am glad we stayed at this hotel although we almost did not after reading the person's review of October 26. I am not sure what that person experienced but it sounds like he/she stayed at a different hotel (which might be true because the photo does not at all look like the hotel.)
Our stay was very nice. Beautiful room (we decided to pay a little extra to have a private bath), everything clean and quiet. Beautifully decorated, too. The hotel lies directly at the harbor and is actually a Swedish longhouse with a long and interesting history. Given that this is the only hotel in this remote location, they do an excellent job. Breakfast was yummy and plenty and so was dinner. We were lucky not to have trusted the review of October 26 and to have had a good night's sleep before the long drive up north.

Reading and writing reviews over the past three yrs it's become obvious that none of them should be taken as a guide; they're simply people's opinions and people's criteria are so different. No one's future plans should be based on any of the reviews as people are too idiosyncratic, have their own varied standards and don't like or appreciate the same things. There's no mean average to what makes a good hotel or holiday.

This hotel is a prime example. It was a one night stop on our tour of Iceland and recommended and booked through an agent. We checked it on the web weeks before we arrived and whilst it's obviously an old establishment there's a youtube clip on the hotel website showing it as a stylish hotel with attention paid to food and interior details. Looked good to us.

It's hard then to convey the utter disappointment we experienced when we arrived at 17:30 after a 4 hr drive to find a cramped dark room that resembled a sauna with a TV on the wall, a bathroom that looked like something from the 1960's and even worse to find no dinner when we went into the Restaurant at 20:15. Apparently the Hotel was 'getting ready for a function' and the kitchen had closed at 20:00. At check-in 3 hrs earlier no one had thought to mention that to us and Djupivogur isn't exactly buzzing with eateries. At this time of year there's a snack bar and the petrol station.

The kitchen staff said they would 'ask' the chef if he would do us something ....... so our only chance of food for the evening, apart from re-dressing in 4 layers and walking across the village, depended on the whim of the chef. He offered fish soup or a Pizza. The following morning at check out we got the bill ..... the soup and a beer each cost us 6180Kr which is £31 of anyone's hard earned cash ......... the beers were charged at 1000Kr each, on sale at the garage across the road for 287Kr ...... £10.70 for each bowl of soup.

Yes Iceland is expensive. And yes some of the food and restaurants are very, very good. We ate in them. But when you find yourself in a one horse town with no other food option the charges at this hotel felt like being taken advantage of. Especially when there isn't another place to stay within an hours drive.

Couldn't wait to leave. Oh and the artfully directed youtube clip seemed to miss certain 'style features' of the hotel that we didn't. I've included a few photographs.

Room Tip: My tip to help other travellers choose a good room is to keep driving and try the Hotel Hofn in Hofn...

What a beautiful hotel right on the harbour. We ate here for lunch and at the local café for dinner. Lovely staff and a great atmosphere. Ideal for exploring the East Fjords. Highly recommended with a lovely quiet room

We stayed here for one night as part of a group on a bus tour. Nice hotel. Room a bit cramped with a double and a single bed. The latter was right up against the heater running along the wall. The double bed was also right up against the wall on two sides, making it less accessible for the person against the wall. Free wifi in rooms. Not much to see in the village – hotel quite large for such a small place! We had a set menu dinner as well as breakfast included in our package – meals were ok. We were told this was a good place to view the northern lights. Early in September we had thought we would be too early in the season to see them, but apparently not. However we went out too late (about 11.30pm), and they had already been and gone!
