“A must do in Iceland”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2013 via mobile

If you visit Iceland looking for the northern lights, you must get to the Myvatn lake area in the north. This hotel is not luxury but it doesn't need to be. The service, people and attentions surely make it up for the simple looks of the furniture and the small space in the bathroom. There is nothing to complain about. All facilities are clean and well maintained. The food is really good but don't expect many options. It has a good location for the aurora watching and for other activities in the area. They are just great! We stay there 2 nights in late November when there is enough snow to look like winter but you still see all the rock formations. Would stay there again.

Iceland was such a wonderful experience. It was made an ever better experience by staying at the Sel Hotel Myvatn. The staff were very welcoming and accommodating. They give you a wake up call if the Northern lights decide to show themselves. The hotel also offers driving services if you wish to be dropped off and picked up from a location. It also assist you with bookings and choosing packages such as the lagoon/hot springs, 4wd adventures etc. Both of our tour guides were awesome aswell. To top it off, after a cold day in the snow, you come back to the best food we have ever eaten. With 3 courses every night, you don't really need lunch! Overall, my partner and I would stay again.

Stayed at Sel Hotel as part of our honeymoon trip. It was one of the few hotels that recognised we were on honeymoon, presenting us with a pair of shot glasses on arrival! Staff were friendly and helpful, taking the time to point out all the local attractions on the map. The room was adequate, but nothing special. I do have one thing to warn about for travellers to this area, although it has nothing specific to do with this hotel, but about the area in general: there is quite a bit of sulphur in the water, and the hot shower water has the distinct smell of rotten eggs - I would advise investing heavily in bringing along some pure water and/or wipes if you wish to avoid this. Food is alright: nothing standout, and a bit on the expensive side - a la carte is better than the buffet. Free WiFi, but not the best in the rooms. Ultimately, I think it's an OK hotel that could be so much more with a bit of a renovation.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the Lake and scenery have the better view, but they also face the road. However, this...

This area is located only 20 minutes from lake myvatn the active geothermal area therefore tap water and shower will smell like rotten eggs, stinks.

There is a souviner store right across the street and another area full of Crater. Great morning exercise!
Breakfast is good they have geyser bread which tastes great.
Room size is pretty small and those furniture were old, needs renovation!

You cant beat the location of this hotel, just across from the lake, near the pseudo craters. The hotel is like a ski lodge, but with fairly small rooms. You can hear whats going on in your neighbors rooms - talking, moving furniture around, even snoring - so if you're a light sleeper and you have some noisy neighbors that could be a problem. Breakfast was good - standard Iceland breakfast which we are pretty used to now.

Nice hotel that could do with a renovation. It would be an absolute winner of a hotel in the hotel with a Scandi upgrade from the dark interiors it currently has. It could also do with some privacy curtains on the windows, in addition to the blinds. The bed was reasonably comfortable, and the bathroom very clean.

Buffet breakfast is fine, with a good selection. There is a cafe just across the parking area for drinks and snacks.

We stayed here one night as part of the Iceland Complete tour and had a very nice stay. The room was clean and had everything we needed. The bed was fine and the shades kept out the sunlight so that we were able to sleep with no problem. Food was good as well as the service.
