The power plant is just stunning. All the pipes an the steam seem from another world. Drive past the plant for some great views and hikes.

One of our favorite activities around Myvatn. The lava is still steaming in places, and you can walk all around it on paths, including right up to the cinder cone. Most people only walk up to the wooden viewing point near the rhyolite hill; the crowds thin out at the lava fields. We wandered around for almost 2 hours. Word of advice though: when we were there, on a weekday in June, the bathrooms were closed. People had clearly been just stepping off the paths and going in the grass or in the lava field, often leaving tp behind. Gross. So pee before you go, just in case. And don't do what those nasty folks did!

we saw smoke rising around us and pulled in to see this amazing area. the geothermal activity was a treat to all the senses - the smell of sulfer, the colors of the rock formations, the colors of the water, the bubbling and steaming and hissing sounds.

What an incredible place to visit. Have never seen anything like the volcano and lava fields that we saw. The hike to the volcano wasn't bad, but be sure to have your wind gear, as the winds here can be very strong and can also be cold. The views at the top are amazing. So much and so far to see.

About 7 km North of highway 1 is the water filled crater of krafla. It takes only a few seconds to walk from the parking lot to the rim. You can walk around the rim. There are other trails in the area to mud pots and steam vents. A small viewpoint just before Krafla overlooks the valley and a geothermal power plant.
