There is something extra special visiting an area you know could explode almost any time soon! Dramatic scenery and well worth a visit.

Although a folklore the tales behind the larva formations make for an interesting walk. You could almost imagine trolls hiding under the rock formations (great for kids) and the holes in the rocks are spectacular and make for great pictures. There are several structured walks, but it is still easy to get lost and the marker posts are not always easy to spot. The average walk is 1.5 hours and it is a rough terrain, make sure you have decent shoes... also with Iceland's weather be prepared as there is very little shelter.

As volcano junkies this was probably my favourite volcanic site in Iceland - it was fabulous to hike along the still steaming fissures and imagine what the eruption was like. The landscape was amazing, and if you hiked on there were less tourists than many of the other volcanic hot spots (pardon the pun!) in Iceland. We had our own 4WD which we had hired so weren't on a 'schedule' which was super!

Liked the contrast between the black lava from the Krafla eruption and the deep blue lake formed in the crater below the peak with snow patches all around

The path from the parking lot to Leithnjukur (part of Krafla Lava Fields) was blocked off with a sign saying "danger zone, hazardous condition." Many tourists ignored the sign and did the hike anyway. We asked later at our hotel about this closure and the proprietor said there are parts still covered in snow that could be dangerous to walk on. Beautiful scenery and great pictures possible. If you're in the mood for hot dogs, there was a hot dog hut set up in the parking lot.
