Used in the Hollywood blockbuster this is a great stop on the ring-road.

We took the first turning to the falls (going anti-clockwise around the island). The road led us to a spectacular view but took us about and hour to get there over horrible road surface. I think I would advise using the quicker second turning!

Saw this from the east side on August 25. Road #864 still could be traveled by regular vehicle. Takes extra time but better view. Able to get right up to the waterfall. Gorgeous rainbow was a bonus. Advise wearing hiking shoes and having waterproof clothes or poncho. Rain came up quickly

You earn your view of Dettifoss. The road to the car park is 20 minutes off the Ring Road. From the car park, it is a 15 minute hike to the falls. Dettifoss can be viewed from both sides. We saw it from the western side. The western side is the lush green side, as the water sprays/mists the area constantly. The other side was rocky and not green.

It is truly awe inspiring. The water thunders over the falls. It is loud, powerful, and you will get misted on. There are different paths around the edge of the canyon to view the falls from. Some paths are slippery. On a sunny day you will see a double rainbow. On the way back to the car park, you can detour about 10 minutes to see Selfoss.

This was a very impressive waterfall to see. It is so powerful and loud, I just felt in awe. It is a bit of a walk to get to it from the parking lot, but the views from above are delightful. You will likely feel the spray of the water in the wind as well. It is a little slippery around the viewing areas, so be careful. This is a little ways away from the other attractions in Myvatn, but it’s worth a stop.

On our way around Ring Circle, we stopped at Dettifoss Waterfalls. After about a 1/2 mike walk from the parking lot, we encountered a beautiful massive waterfall. Because it was raining all day, the river was flooded, but the falls were big and beautiful. We walked another 0.7 mile to another large waterfall, then back to the car. There were outside toilets by the parking area.
