Dettifoss is the strongest waterfall of all Europe in terms of flow power. It does not have a classical beauty as the other prominent waterfalls of Iceland due to the color of its water (brownish, greyish as the water comes from glaciers) and due to rocky surroundings however, it's definitely hypnotizing. I could have watched the water falling for hours and got hypnotized: it's that strong! From the parking lot (where there are no facilities other than toilets), you have to walk through moon like terrain (which used to be the old part of the river, deviated after an earthquake) for around 5 minutes. While walking you can hear the voice of powerfull waterfall yet you can not see it and you make a couple of more steps and all of a sudden majestic waterfall is in front of you. It's definitely one of the must sees of Iceland

I loved it here. The waterfall is HUGE and the power behind it was beyond words. You can get right up and close since there are no ugly ropes to keep you from the water. Tour groups come and go but if your here alone it is easy to get great pictures when the tourist groups leave. We loved it!

Its glacier melt so its carrying a lot of "grit" and thus looks dirty. IMO Gulfloss is more spectacular but this is worthy of a short detour from the Ring Road. I would take the paved road, not the gravel road. (They are on the different sides of the river.)

A tremendous waterfall with lots of great vantage points. There are two ways to get here. The way we went took about 45 minutes on poor roads. You can also take a road on the western side of the falls that looks shorter on the map. It may have a better road. I don't know. But its worth looking in to.

Take the fantastic roads running around Jokulsargljufur national park - the aforementioned 864 and 862. Take in the fantastic moon scape scenery, the as ergo cliffs, the views across to Krafla and numerous other volcanos. Oh and stop at the wonderful Detifoss on both sides. One side to get up close and personal, so close you can get on the edge of the top of the powerful falls, and on the other, the 862 side, you get a more full on encounter, albeit more distant, to get the sense of power. While you are there take the short walk to Selfoss, not as powerful but perhaps more beautiful, and very few people seem to bother to take the ten minute walk.
