“Lovely all-round stay”
Reviewed November 1, 2013

The accommodation here was lovely, the rooms are very comfortable, lots of space and everything you could need. The room and bed were comfortable, the under-floor heating (which can be easily controlled) kept the room nice and warm (essential even in August). While it is true that you do not get a view of the lake, as some reviewers have pointed out, I would not describe this as a negative as the lake is easily accessible with a 5-minute walk. The restaurant in the cow barn is a wonderful touch and I’m sure it would be a lot of fun for young families – we enjoyed it despite being in our thirties. The food was outstanding – especially the breakfast! The staff here were all extremely friendly and extremely helpful, although I have to give special mention to the young French man behind reception when we arrived who talked us through everything, gave us a lot of very good tips on what to see and do. I’d also like to add that yes, there is a strong sulphuric smell to the water probably stronger than most other areas we visited, but this can hardly be blamed on the owners – one look at the surrounding geography should make it quite clear why this is the case and frankly this added to the sense of wonder for us – you truly are in a geographic playground here! Amazing place, great accommodation that we would highly recommend to others.

When I read about the possibility of sharing breakfast with cows, it was a no-brainer. I knew my pig farmer grandfather would laugh at such a notion--paying money to watch cows being milked while you have breakfast! And, what a breakfast it is--traditionally European with cheese wheels, biscuits, smoked lamb, split hard-boiled eggs, dense berry muffins (you'll be thinking about them the rest of your time in Iceland), muesli, skyr and the best loaves of geothermal baked rye bread dotted with dried fruit.
The rooms at Vogafjos are the perfect combo of Scandinavian style meets log cabin! And, given the remote location of the guesthouse, there is zero light pollution--which makes it an ideal home base for Northern Lights gazing. The only interruption will be loons calling on the nearby lake.

The silence of the lava field and punch of manure in the air is the best immersion into northern Iceland. And for those who have never experienced a working farm up close and personal, you'll re-think and have a greater appreciation for the dollop of cream in your coffee that morning!

Conveniently situated for exploration around Dimmuborgir, the bird museum, Myvatn Nature Baths and the mud pots. And be sure to get your fill of smoked arctic char and cold Koldi pints at Gaemil Baernin or smoked trout to go from the Dimmuborgir cabins.

The staff are over the top helpful as well and provided us with road condition reports for our day ahead.

Room Tip: Number 15 is located at the end of the cabins and offers the best private perch for watching the aur...

We were supposed to spend two night at Vogafjos, but due to a massive storm of snow/wind we were land locked for two nights in Egilsstadir. The trip to Myvatn was, due to the weather, highly dangerous especially across and over the alpine region. So to get to Vogafjos was a blessed relief. It was snowing heavily on our arrival into Myvatn so finding Vogafjos was we thought going to be tough, but it wasn't. We worked out what was the reception and duly presented ourselves for check in. We were met by a very arrogant, disrespectful young man, who appeared to be more interested in the young lady he was trying to teach than giving us due respect. A disappointing start. We were shown our cabin, which was located over road from reception. The cabin was more than adequate. The bed was ok, the bathroom was of a decent size as was the shower. We slept ok until the room with its underfloor heating kicked in, then we roasted. So not the best nights sleep. We had our late afternoon/evening meal in the restaurant. Which was very good, as was the service. Breakfast was ok, with good offerings. It was busy at the time so patients was a virtue. The cows eating area was an interesting inclusion to the restaurant. Never eaten in a cow shed before!!!! Joking apart it was good experience. It was a shame we could only spend one night here. Myvatn has plenty to offer. The blizzard conditions spoilt our time there. Vogafjas is well worth the stay.

I guess the smelly hot water is inevitable as they extract them from the natural springs around the area where sulphur content is high.

Other from that, the wooden room itself is very cosy. The bed is not very comfortable though. I got a bad back pain when I wake up the next day. You can park your car right in front of your room.

The check in desk is at the cafe which is few hundred meters across the other side of the guesthouse. There is a cow farm run by the guesthouse just next door.

Receptionists were friendly and knowledgeable of the area, giving us good information of what to see around the area and when is the best time of the day. Unfortunately we could not see the northern lights...

Menu of the restaurant is limited but the lamb shank and garlic were delicious!

We loved the wood interior of the cabin, which made it very cosy. The bathroom with the shower was immaculate. Breakfast buffet had lots to choose from. Dinner was delicious. Courteous staff were always available.
To see the cows through the glass wall added to the experience.

We don't want to be unfair to this hotel because other guests were more sympathetic to it than my wife and I.
The sleeping accommodation is a series of purpose built log cabins about 300 yards from the restaurant/reception. Our room was big but dark and gloomy.
The beds were also concrete hard. Not chain hotel firm but rock solid. In all seriousness, you either need a sleeping mat or sleeping bag to sleep on.
You also need to be aware of the under floor heating which doesn't register as hot until 2am when its like sleeping in the Amazon!
Car parking is very convenient near to the rooms.
There was a very young, and very pressured, receptionist and so we felt a bit like we were on a production line when we arrived.
It wasn't so much bad manners as a young man under a lot of pressure and with other things on his mind than customer service.
Since we live in the countryside, the idea of cows looking at us is not exactly novel. However, the big attraction at Vogafjos is cows having their evening meal behind a glass screen. For many visitors this was a big hit, and there was a queue of photographers, so clearly the hotel owners know how to please tourists.
The restaurant is near to the lake and so sitting outside was impractical because of the hoards of mosquitoes. We've no complaint about this because that's the way nature is: Iceland isn't Disney World!
Against this, the sunset over the lake was spectacular and worth getting bitten for.
Our evening meal was hearty, quasi home cooking and, by Icelandic standards, fair value. The staff were flat out and this again killed any personal service.
The breakfast was the best we had in Iceland. A good range of local produce well presented with courtesy - and fairly priced too.
The hotel is perfectly placed for exploring the lava fields and huge geysers which are at the rear of the sleeping accommodation.
If we couldn't find anything else in the area, we would stay again and make sure that we left the window open on our room. Equally, we wouldn't go out of our way to use this accommodation again because there were other options in the area.

Room Tip: We had the end room in the row and this was the quietest and most convenient. In truth, there's...

We are on a one month Iceland tour, having been here two years ago for two weeks. All our arrangements were made by Nordic Visitor as part of a self drive tour, so, we don't know the specific prices for accommodation. Nordic Visitor, in their tour packages offer three types of accommodation and we booked comfort accommodation (private bathroom, "nice" hotels & guesthouses), breakfast is always included. This will be one of many reviews for this trip.

This is a wonderful guesthouse on a working farm in one of the many spectacular areas of Iceland. Staff were not just friendly but it was obvious they were doing their best to help many of us who were stranded or concerned about being stranded by an unusual snowstorm causing roads to be closed. Over and over the staff at the desk were looking up road information for travellers. The rooms are nicely laid out, clean, good size and in a pleasant surroundings. The main building that is also a cow and milking barn is across the road from the rooms. The cow area is glassed off from the dining room but easily visible through large windows. Breakfast and other meals are served in the main building. Breakfast was very generous with lots of choices and staff kept replenishing as needed. This place was a delight.
