“Great service and restaurant but a small room”
Reviewed October 30, 2012

It was very pricey to stay in Myvatn but this was the best option for us. The room was nice and clean but very small for the four of us. The wifi didn't work in our room.

The staff was very friendly and helpful telling us about what to see in the area.

The included breakfast buffet was great. Try the fresh milk! The restaurant was great for dinner as well. One of the best meals on my trip. Very fresh ingredients!

We stayed at Vogafjos for 2 nights, while we toured the Lake Myvatn. The good things first -the location is quite nice - it is far away from the city, a huge advantage when we wanted to see the Northern lights. It is on the edge of Lake Myvatn, and near all the best attractions of the place. The room was cozy and pleasant, and the breakfast spread was out of the world - really yummy, and a wide variety of food. They have an open menu from 12 noon onward, and there is some good vegetarian stuff too. The cowshed next to the restaurant is a great hit with little kids - my son loved it. The staff are friendly - and Olaf, the owner is wonderful and kind.
However, the farm is really in the middle of nowhere - not much public transport, so it might make more sense to have your own car to drive around . The rooms are across the road from the cafe and the lake, and it gets very dark in the evening - so make sure you carry your torch. There is no TV, and if you are travelling with little kids, make sure you take some books/games along with you.
On the whole, I would strongly recommend this place for an authentic Iceland experience.

Room Tip: Ask for the wooden rooms, the bigger ones.

Stayed here in November 2011, usually when this area is covered by snow (which makes transport difficult), but we got lucky, no snow in sight.

Vogafjos Guesthouse, is basically a few log cabins on some farm land. The room was comfortable and had no significant issues.

The best thing about Vogafjos is it's location. Myvatn is a beautiful area and the isolation from the busy, modern world is refreshing. Vogafjos is even more isolated as it's separate from the nearest town (but not too far to walk).

The staff here were very friendly and helpful. We're vegetarian and we're struggling to find food to meet our requirements in North Iceland, but the chef here was happy to customise/create dishes for us.

Visting Myvatn was a great experience, staying at Vogafjos made it even better!

We had read about the lovely sounding Vogafjos cafe and accommodations, and when we arrived September 8th they had a room that would sleep 4 of us. The room was lovely, really nice fixtures, 4 single beds - with lovely linen and blankets. There were windows at either end of the room (for me to pathetically try and see the northern lights.. no luck.).

We walked over to have dinner and a few drinks - less than 5 minutes walk (although when it's dark, it's very dark out!). The food and staff at the cafe were fabulous. We were all happy with our meals - excellent presentation, big portions and very tasty. I was especially happy with my lamb shanks & desert! We worked our way through the local spirits also.. The next morning we were back from breakfast - this was the most stylish and tasty breakfast of our trip through Iceland. I don't think I even did it justice as I was still full from the night before! Again - staff were really lovely and attentive.

Downside - the bathroom was attached to the main room & the geothermal warm water has a noticeable sulphur smell as the water comes out of the taps.

Would I go back - yup :)

I had the pleasure of staying at Vogafjos during the off-season in October, and loved it. The room was warm, cosy, and clean and the beds very comfortable. Water in the shower is HOT. I love that the rooms are off the main highway; it is absolutely quiet all night. We had the good fortune to watch the northern lights--both from the front porch of our cabin, and from the hot pools at Myvatn Nature Baths. Marvelous!

I love the Cowshed Cafe that is part of the Guesthouse. Big floor to ceiling windows look out onto Myvatn Lake. Sunsets are brilliant! The cafe feels both ultra-modern and historic--which it is. The farm has been in the family for at least a couple generations, and it's still a working farm, with old outbuildings about the place. I loved looking out the windows at the old rock walls undulating down to the lake, I loved watching the cows being milked through windows in the cafe.
The breakfast is as good as any you'll get in Iceland: Fresh fruit; vegetables from a nearby greenhouse that grows vegetables year-round, specially-made Geysir Bread, muesli, dried fruit, eggs, crackers, farm-made cheese and other exotic cheeses, local jams, etc. etc., all served buffet-style. You won't leave hungry. The dinners are wonderful, too, with fresh salads, including one of my favorite greens--Kale--and the chef employs the use of Angelica seeds creatively in a number of dishes and breads. Angelica is native to the region and you'll find it's lovely white flowerheads rising from green compound leaves along the roadsides and fields. Local lamb cooks for 2.5 hours before it is served; local arctic char graces the menu. Anyone familiar with the 100-Mile Diet would find this place wonderful. It exemplifies the 0-Mile Diet!

So many local activities are close by, so Vogafjos serves as a perfect base. Hot springs, waterfalls, an ice cave, great hiking, birding, horseback riding, and even the coast is quite close. I stayed a couple nights at Vogafjoss, and wished I'd had more time. As far as the season, Myvatn felt magical in the fall, with the autumn leaves and crisp sunny days. I can imagine the winter being even more magical. Why not fly to North Iceland from Reykjavik, rent a car, and enjoy the peace and quiet!

It was raining when we arrived on September 9th and after a quick check-in we were shown the room which was about a normal 3-4 minute walk from where meals were served. It was a very modern guesthouse lodge with twin beds and very clean. Room was small but that is typical of the accommodations in the small villages. We had a great dinner watching cows being milked in their attached cow barn. Great fun and most unusual. Food was well prepared and staff was extremely pleasant. The next morning we awoke to a raging blizzard with 50 mph winds and many inches of very wet snow. Power went out throughout the village and road travel was impossible as all roads were closed. We had to spend a second night (booked for one) as we and other guests were trapped. The staff did an outstanding job of taking care of all guests, making phone calls to cancel onward reservations, checking with the road crews regarding road and weather conditions all the while serving meals and providing a comfortable environment to wait out the conditions. We would definitely stay here again. The staff went beyond the call of duty to see to it that every guest was taken care of. Regards, Jeff and Gwenn

We had a nice stay here for our 1 night in Myvatn. The room was nice, clean, spacious and felt cozy. There was no real view from the room itself, but it wasn't far to the lake or any of the area attractions. The breakfast was great! Good selection, high quality stuff...and the staff were friendly, giving us suggestions where to go hiking and what else to see. The room was expensive, but so were most of the hotels in Iceland and this place had some character -- if that's important to you!
