Epavlis Suites Hotel
Ranked #5 of 29 Kalambaka B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed November 5, 2011

We just got back from staying in Kalambaka and the Epavlis Suites Hotel was fantastic. Our room had 2 balconies looking at the rocks of Meteora.....how they built those monasteries up there will always amaze me. Huge main room with kingsize bed, kitchenette and fireplace, a loft with 2 more beds and large bathroom with a spa-jet shower. Plenty of room for luggage in the built-in closet. TV, stero, WI-FI. Breakfast was enormous with rice pudding, coldcuts, fresh breads & marmelades, juice & coffee. We were also served a delicious spinach pie in filo dough that was out of this world, made by the owner's mother-in-law! The owner, Spiro, is very friendly and makes sure that you have a great stay.

We intended to stay at the top-rated Guesthouse Monastiri, but found that the last room had been taken. The extremely helpful owner (I think her name was Marie) called her friend Spiros, who she said had a new place we might like. Sprios picked us up and took us to his sprawling new guesthouse, maybe one half km away, but even closer to the rocks.
The grounds are still under construction, and looking through the main building it seemed that only two of the four rooms in the main building were completely finished. We were the only guests. Our room was essentially as described -- brand new, spotless, high quality furnishings and fixtures. Free Wi-Fi. Our balcony had us seated directly below the rocks, and directly below one of the monasteries. On Saturday night we were able to hear the bells ring, I assume signaling the end of the sabbath.
Spiros was a very eager host. Only upon departing on Monday morning did we learn that he has a "real job" and that his guesthouse is something of a dream. Nevertheless, he was there to cook us a fresh breakfast each morning, and when we returned from dinner on Saturday night he came over and poured us some of his mother-in-law's homemade spirits.
From the slim guest register, we determined that the first guests stayed about a year ago, but it did not seem there had been too many. Perhaps he is waiting until all of the improvements are complete.
Nevertheless, if you are heading to Meteora, I highly recommend this hotel. One note of caution -- the little access road up the steep hill was not yet completely paved as of Nov 2009, so if you are not game for a short hike between the hotel and Kalampaka, this might not be the place for you (and taxis seem to charge a minimum of 4 euros, so taking a taxi every time might be a bit expensive). The flip side is that you are actually right under the rocks (closer than any of the other guesthouses, despite the image they attempt to create with their pictures).
We paid 75 euors per night, breakfast and tax included, which I felt was a fair deal for the quality of the lodging, the food, and the service.
