Our room cost 50 euros which is very good value nowadays. Room on front overlooking harbour with small balcony. Clean but not much room for luggage. decent shower. Very good for a one night stop. Helpful reception.
It is a pleasant town

Comfortable mid-range hotel with all rooms having balcony views over the harbour. Bright breakfast room with good service. No traffic noise problems in May but it will be much busier in the summer. Just two minutes' walk to the first of dozens of waterfront restaurants but for more traditional taverna cuisine try these two recommendations: Poulikakos on the right just before the harbour square - e.g. oven-baked chicken and potatoes €5.50, and at the other end of the promenade the beach grillhouse Barba where a huge plate of meltingly-tender spit-roasted pork will also cost just €5.50. Gythio is a great touring centre for must-see sights including Monemvasia, the Mani peninsula and the spectacular Caves of Diros.

The hotel interior was a bit dated, but kept clean. The hotel staff nice, but not overly friendly. Rooms were average all around in terms of size and quality of bed.
The location was excellent, right on the main strip on the harbour. All rooms had balconies looking out over the harbour. Lots of parking on the road in front of the hotel and a quick walk anywhere in town.
Price was good, and included breakfast (egg & toast).

A rather basic hotel in a town which does not boast upscale establishments. The room was truly Spartan (after all, Sparta is only 45 kms away), but not too small. The big advantage of the hotel is its central location and, even more, the sweeping views of the harbor and the bay from every room. All rooms seem to have seaside balconies. The price charged was decent and the breakfast was included in the price. The breakfast room staff was very friendly and helpful, as was the receptionist.

We stayed for three days at the Aktaion in June 2008. Our experience was mixed. The hotel was clean though basic. The staff did not have much English but tried to be helpful. Breakfast was served in a sunny room and was adequate.

We were switched to a large room for three after complaining about the size of our original room. Our room (suite?) consisted of a small room with a twin bed which served as a sitting room to the main bedroom with a double bed. That allowed for us to sleep in one room and leave our bags in the other. The beds were extra firm, but not bad. The bath was small until you tried to take a shower - then it became miniscule. The saving grace was the balcony which for our room was double sized and overlooked the main street, the harbor and the Islet of Marathisi. The views were wonderful. And the location allows you to walk anywhere in 5 minutes. There are a couple decent restaurants and cafes in view from your room. The downside of that is that on the weekend there was alot of traffick noise on the street until very late. It is hard to believe that there are that many people in this tiny town until you realize they are all driving past your room!

Having said all that, Gythio is a tiny town and there really are not a lot of choices in the town itself. Looking at a couple of the other places, I think the Aktaion was as good as the others and a decent value at 80 Euros @.
