Chateau de Saint-Loup
Reviewed August 15, 2012

We have just spent two nights at this magical chateau. We were slightly concerned that our two daughters might not appreciate it - we were wrong. They, too, we're enchanted by our rooms at the top of the ancient keep, over-looking the gorgeous chateau itself. Our hosts (and they do feel like hosts, not 'hotel-keepers') were utterly charming. Their love for the chateau and the enormous restoration task they are undertaking was instantly infectious and it was both a delight and a privilege for us to have been part of it. I can't imagine anywhere better for a wedding - but if that's not imminent, go and stay for a while - I cannot recommend it highly enough. We will be back and look forward to seeing how the restoration is progressing.

Room Tip: You can choose the chateau itself of the keep. The main house is huge and the bedrooms and lounge ar...

We booked 5 nights at Château de Saint-Loup as a convenient place to stay whilst attending a wedding in a local village. However, it turned out to be far more than a convenient place to stay. It was a memorable experience that added enormously to our time in the area. Charles-Henri de Bartillat, together with Sophie, has taken on the task of restoring the château. It is a labour of love. Their commitment is extraordinary and their achievements to date remarkable. As a guest, whilst enjoying a unique opportunity to share in a piece of history, you cannot help but develop an affection for the place. If your idea of hospitality is lying alongside an artificial pool with 24/7 room service, this is probably not for you. However, if you appreciate genuine hospitality with welcoming and knowledgeable hosts, then you will not be disappointed. One magical evening, our hosts served a candlelit dinner in wonderful surroundings. It proved to be one of the highlights of our trip and will remain with us as a special memory. We also benefitted from Charles-Henri’s advice on places to visit in the area. In doing so, we enjoyed new experiences that otherwise would have been missed. Château de Saint-Loup is a real gem and we would happily return.

I can't believe that this chateau has had some poor reviews, it is fantastic. We had the whole place to ourselves with acres of beautiful grounds to picnic and relax in, and good facilities in the village (restaurants etc.). We stayed in the Gothic Room in the 11th Century keep and were blown away by it.

Nothing was too much trouble for the lovely Charles-Henri and Sofie, including a long private tour of the chateau.

The chateau restoration is a work in progress, but the rooms available to the public are fantastic. Oh, and we didn't see any ghosts, but who knows.... We will definitely be back.

We were really blown away by this chateau. My husband and I felt immensely priviledged being able to settle down in deep cushioned antique chairs (museum pieces i guess) in front of a roaring fire and sip delicious Loire wine with a good read in surroundings that a C17th Marquis would have felt quite a home in. Although we were tempted to stay in the room at the top of the C15th tower with the enormous sculpted chimney which is such a museum piece you can have nothing but candlelight to go to bed with we eventually chose a lovely room in the chateau itself. An unforgettable stay with delicious food (the best foie gras we have ever tasted) and charming chatelains the comte Charles-Henri and Sophie.
We couldn't recommend it more highly!!

We enjoyed our 3 night stay as part of a birthday event, and could not have enjoyed ourselves more. Charles Henri and Sofie made us feel welcomed. The Orangerie (formal garden) is stunningly well done and fragrant. If you are looking for 4 stars, and a generic room, or room service and someone to wait on you, do not come here. If you are looking for a stay in a welcoming B&B, with a real sense of adventure and experiencing chateau life, this is a great property. We stayed in the keep, in a room without electricity with bath down spiral stone stairs, but how many chances does one get in one's life to experience a room essentially unchanged in centuries; waking up to see exactly what one would have seen in the 15th or 16th century.

What can I say? This is a great vision of French country chateau life. Not for everyone, but if you are looking for a memorable experience, experiencing history, hospitality, and architecture, enjoy yourself. We did.

We didn't want to stay, after we have seen the room and chateau itself, still the owner didn't want to give us the money back (I understand he needs money, but it's not our problem). The travelling agency, that we will never use the service again, finally gave us the half of the sum back after months of quarell.

The remote and natural beauty of the gardens, moat, orchard and resident horses may set this Chateau apart from others found on the beaten tracks surrounding the Loire. The accommodation within the castle was beautiful, but was by no means the standards you might expect in an expensive hotel. The stories described by the host (the Count) enabled the castle to become animated and this added a very interesting dimension. Evening drinks in the garden, the simple dinner dished out by the Count’s wife, and the affectionate tortoise shell cat added a personal touch to our short stay as guests, in what is essentially a family home. Like others, there were some irregularities to our bill however these were resolved with emailed records of our agreements. Over all this was an admittedly pricy, but none-the-less unique and worthwhile experience. We felt no qualms about paying the agreed expense as this would beat a luxury hotel for charm any day of the week. We also felt that the custom would help to preserve the Chateau— a symbol of French times past, as well as the soul of the property brought to life by those who care for the castle. We would certainly recommend this to others but would say not to expect the trappings of a top class hotel. This is a ‘homely’, ‘authentic’ Chateau experience set against a very pretty backdrop.
