Auberge des Vieux Moulins Banaux
Reviewed April 13, 2013

We last stayed here in April 2012 and a year on the process of restoration continues at a slow pace. The location is idyllic and the rushing water past this old paper mill is wonderful to listen to whilst drifting off to sleep.

However the rooms and upstairs public areas are still being refurbished and room 1 was not completely finished. It is all perfectly comfortable and at EUR 55 for that room is good value but it is clearly a struggle to get all of the work finished. Outside is much the same with one half oa an old barn now finally demolished and a rather unattractive low building in the garden partially demolished.

What brings us back is the restaurant and this again could not be faulted in terms of quality. If anything we thought the portion size was too generous for the richness of the food and some of the dishes could have been scaled back without us thinking we had been short-changed. There is a choice between set and a la carte but the set menus are good value if the choices suit you. The wine list is educational as well as comprehensive and not excessively priced.

We will continue to return because it is a convenient stop on the way north being just 283 miles from the Channel Tunnel but we wish fervently that they get the restoration completed as soon as possible as it has been going on for at least the last 5 years !

Room Tip: Room 8 is still our favourite

We have just spent 2 nights at the Auberge, having found it a year ago when we were unable to stay as it was a Sunday and the hotel was closing after lunch. The room was adequate but nothing fancy; however, it was clean and warm, the bed was comfortable and the shower was good, so no complaints. The WiFi signal was a bit erratic on the first night but stable on the second. It was very quiet so we slept extremely well.

The buffet breakfast was quite good, with a reasonable selection. Some of the bread wasn't particularly fresh but, toasted, it was OK. We had to ask for cereal bowls and plates the first morning and the milk wasn't replenished but apart from that everything was fine.

The great charm of the Auberge is the restaurant, which has both elegance and old-world character, with the mill wheels and gears the main feature. On the first night we had an excellent 3-course dinner, with all dishes being delicious and of sufficient quantity. The following night was Feb 14th and the only option was the Valentine's Day special menu, at €45 each. This turned out to be a 2½-hour, 7-course banquet. The food was of the highest order, the langoustine starter and the fillet steak being especially delicious. There was great variety in the dishes, all of which were beautifully presented. The Chef is obviously a master of his craft! The service was pleasant and well paced, such that we didn't have to wait overly long, nor were we rushed at any point. Given that the restaurant was full, this was quite an achievement. However, a few of the guests fared noticeably less well than we and one couple complained and left, having waited for about 30 minutes with nothing served.

The previous night we had a table by the external wall and we felt chilled (it was a cold night) so we requested a table by the log fire for the next night, which thankfully we duly got. Given the exceptional quality and number of dishes, we felt that the €45 price represented reasonable value. All in all it was a wonderful evening, one of the best meals we have ever had.

The owners and all the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, and the location was handy on our journey down through France. As others have mentioned, this is a huge and, in parts, very old building in a large and peaceful garden. Renovating it will take a great deal of time and money. The restaurant and bar etc have been nicely done, and there is a very pretty terrace attached to the restaurant. Other public spaces are extremely tired.
We had a delicious dinner, chosen from some mouth-watering menus. Breakfast was perfectly adequate, except that the coffee was tepid. It had been made some time earlier and was served from a thermos-type pot. The waitress poured us some from a larger pot, which had remained hotter.

Room Tip: we had one of the best rooms on the first floor. It has has everything you need in to a rather smal...

We stayed here with friends on our last day of a two week holiday in France. The Auberge was one of our best stops and a great way to celebrate our holiday. Although the Auberge lacks an elevator, we were given help getting our bags upstairs. Our rooms had beautiful views overlooking the old millstream. Dinner was outstanding. We only wish we could find an excuse to come back to the region and stay here again.

Stayed here one night travelling in Burgundy and it was quiet, relaxing and friendly. Staff were helpful and the location is beautiful, gardens alongside the river. The restaurant food was really good, regional specialities beautifully cooked. Lovely place for a stopover.

Stayed here with my husband for 4 nights whilst touring the burgundy region. Lovely old mill with fantastic gardens. We had a room (second floor) with a front facing view and loved opening our shutters to the sound of the water running under the bridge. The room was basic and could do with a little TLC, but was impeccably clean, lovely fresh towels left daily & with the added touch of sweets left on our pillow when the maid had serviced the room. The only let down for us was the restaurant, even though we had read previous comments on here about the quality of the food I have to say we were extremely disappointed. We dined at the hotel on the night of arrival with much excited anticipation, but thought the meal was just ‘ok’ (squirty cream was in abundance!).In giving it the benefit of the doubt we tried it again on our final night (& my birthday...) but have to say we were even more disappointed than the first time. Maybe their regular chef was on holiday or something, but we certainly couldn’t rate the food as other reviewers had. Overall though we would definitely stay here again if travelling through the area: beautiful hotel, well priced, lovely room… only we would give the restaurant a miss next time.

The setting is truly idyllic, an old mill surrounded by gently flowing rivers, a terrace overlooking the mill to eat dinner and tables under the trees behind the mill to enjoy an aperitif or afternoon tea. The room we had 5 was absolutely fine, clean, few frills but ideal for a family of 4.
We will return when we next pass through the area.
