Auberge des Vieux Moulins Banaux

The setting is truly idyllic, an old mill surrounded by gently flowing rivers, a terrace overlooking the mill to eat dinner and tables under the trees behind the mill to enjoy an aperitif or afternoon tea. The room we had 5 was absolutely fine, clean, few frills but ideal for a family of 4.
We will return when we next pass through the area.

Good hotel with helpful serviceminded staff. Mind you; the cheaper rooms are on the top of a long and narrow staircase - 3rd floor. If you have trouble with this, choose a (more expensive) room on the lower floors. Great restaurant, obviously also popular among locals. Quite pricey the menu was, but well worth it, I think.

Room Tip: The cheaper rooms are on the higher floors, with no elevator

We were introduced to the mill some years ago by friends who used it as a stopover on the way back from the Alps. The mill is still in a state of restoration but the rooms have been well refurbished and the restaurant is very, very good. We have stayed a good few times now and it is always a wonderfully relaxing end to the holiday.

The rooms we had were EUR 52 a night and we headed for teh menu gouramnd at EUR 42 each but well worth it.

Room Tip: Ask for Room 8 - dual aspect

This is a place where we always start our "Tour de France" for over 10 years. Sounds of rushing water, chimes of the church, calling of an owl at night......pure countryside. The people are more than friendly and the meals real French cooking. Winelist impressive!

I chose a cheap room at the top of the hotel which was basic but comfortable. A dog in the next door room constantly barking was a bit annoying. However having had a word with staff, they spoke to the owners who moved it. The hotel itself is a large watermill, half of which has been converted into the hotel and is absolutely charming. The restaurant was busy, the food excellent and the service very good. I would definitely stay there again.

Perhaps first appearances were not encouraging;a trifle run down, but when we saw the garden and restaurant our minds were changed.
A lovely old house and friendly smiley welcome .
River runs under the Mill and there is not much more to hear than gurgling water.
Our room was large and "modern" in tones of black and silver, comfortable if a little quaint.
But Dinner was top rate and plentiful ,served inside as July was cold, but a magnificent old beamed room with excellent friendly service. There is a nice outside terrace by the stream, which would have been nice if the sun had shone; but our overall impression was ,this is a place already excellent but waiting for money to be enhanced .

We discovered this hotel in 2008 and have tried to find a good excuse to return to it. We finally made it in May 2011. The management had changed, but the hotel, its surroundings, its staff and its food were as excellent as they had been before.

The hotel itself sits outside the small village of Villeneuve l'Archeveque, likely not to figure on anyone's map or itinerary. However it is wonderfully close to Junction 19 of the A5 autoroute, between Sens and Troyes, and thus makes for an excellent overnight stay in a hotel of quality without breaking the bank.

The hotel's main plus is its location and setting. A vast old pair of mill wheels dominate the outside terrace, just perfect for an evening cocktail. And on the other side of the building a lovely garden/park, perfect for wandering or relaxing in.

The hotel is family run and you feel this from the moment you arrive. The welcome is pleasant. There are not many rooms, and some are on the small side with traditionally French micro-thin walls, but it has charm and character.

The restaurant occupies most of the ground floor and again provided us with an excellent and good-value dinner.

All in all a definite recommendation for an overnight stay which may fit in with your travel plans to a holiday destination or on the way home.
