We went to Haiko for a little SPA weekend get away. What we thought was a "SPA" turned out to be one big old pool with two cold (!) jacuzzis and one broken women's sauna. There was supposed to be a shared steam sauna, but instead it was used as the women´s, which by the way was very small. The hotel itself was very old and not modern at all. No place to SPA outside - unless you rent a private sauna by the lake for 230€. Not even any place to sit outside. The rooms were nice inside however, but the view of a dirty old building was not very pleasant. Above this, there was cow dung smell coming form outside from time to time. Plus, all treatments for both days were fully booked - when the hotel itself was not even fully booked!? However, the nature and environment outside is beautiful and very pleasant to they eye. The three course dinner was tasteless and boring, and the breakfast "buffé" was not worth to be called breakfast at all. All in all - NOT a SPA hotel, if that is what your are aiming for. Its beautiful surrounding nature make up for the old and non-modern "SPA-hotel", so a visit here for the nature sake - maybe. The SPA-café is very bad also. The service overall was boring and had no character to it, but they were very friendly.

The location is about 80km from Helsinki and the buss to Borgå will cost you 11,8€, plus and additional 15€ with taxi from Borgå to Haiko. So the location, by a lake, is of course beautiful and it is convenient that it is close to the capital and the airport.

Room Tip: Stay at the "mansion" part of the hotel, not at the "SPA" part.

Haikko, Director of Sales at Hotel Haikko Manor & Spa, responded to this reviewResponded June 25, 2013

One of our spa saunas was temporarily out of service on June 15-16th; we apologize for the inconvenience caused. It should also be noted that our swimming pool area is not a waterpark, but a small Spa with exclusive treatments for adult taste.

Pampering treatments are very popular and therefore recommended always to book in advance.

At hotel Haikko Manor & Spa we provide five (5) different room categories for guests to choose from: welcome to visit our Manor House with now completely renovated rooms which offer genuine manor house ambience and perfect settings for romantic getaways and elegant environment for international business travelers.

This manor hotel boasts its bistro and à la carte with "ecological food produced near to us". But as you take a look at it with a critical eye – or just with an eye – what you find is untraceable factory farmed foreign beef (South American?), lamb from New Zealand (which is 17 000 kilometres away) and generally industrially pre-pepared food stuffs.

After investigating the "ecological breakfast" the only thing that could be called that was the butter. After asking about it from the waitress, the poor lady had to claim that "it is very hard to get enough local products for our needs". Which of course is rubbish as dozens of restaurants in the souther Finland manage to serve good local produce. Surely it must be hard to get enough responsible products at the price that could compete with the Brazilian filet. The sorry part is to then sell it to the unenducated customer as a premium product. That is just sad.

This is exactly the kind of cynical green washing that sends shivers down the spine of a poor customer who's wallet is milked with steel-eyed enthusiasm. Haikko even charges ridiculous prices for tap water (which in Finland usually is served free in any responsible establishment).

Avoid at all costs. It will save you in costs and in self respect.

To end on a positive note: the park of the manor is very beautiful.

Room Tip: Do not choose.

Haikko, Manager at Hotel Haikko Manor & Spa, responded to this reviewResponded June 26, 2013

Dear EkiTaurus,

We at Haikko Manor & Spa want to thank you for bringing up the issue of ecological food - and our sustainability in general. Nevertheless some of the above mentioned issues must be clarified.

Majority of food items in our Spa Bistro are following the so called “50 miles menu” meaning that products come from the close by farms and manufacturers (beef from Kiiala, beer from Malmgård brewery, etc.).

What comes to food at our main restaurant in the manor house we do not have this policy (and don’t “boast” or advertise its assortment as local food) for a very practical reason: due to our huge volumes there simply isn’t enough products available in Southern Finland! Neither we call our breakfast buffet as "ecological breakfast" - but still for example all breads incl. crisps, cakes, rolls, berries and some fruits are from the neighborhood. We at Haikko have lived in harmony with the surrounding nature since the opening of the hotel, as the first manor house hotel in Finland in 1966. From garden to plate was the ideology from the beginning - but as we are not a farm our possibilities to produce own food are very limited, now we only grove herbs and edible flowers ourselves.

During the past 47 years we have had a strong focus on sustainability, being a forerunner on environmental issues within tourism industry in Finland. You can find more information about what we have done at http://www.haikko.fi/fi/tietoa-haikosta/yritysvastuu-ja-ympaeristoe.php (in Finnish). As a recognition to this work Haikko has won various international awards on sustainability. Therefore we find it very unjustified and not fair to be called exercising “green washing in a disgusting way.”

Spring as beutiful and warm as it can be, nice company and friendly staff. Everything works, and you get service even without asking.
Saw old lady of the house. Everybody of staff notices you and there is a feeling of total relaxation.
Good food and spa, - what else do you need?

Room Tip: Old manor is something rare here in Finland with butlers and all.

Spent one night here with my wife. Enjoyed the spa, which was OK, small though and its -110 cold treatment (that was pretty cool!) but the hotel itself wasn't any good. Small, outdated rooms. Great breakfast.

Room Tip: Choose rooms from manor.

We were here over the Easter using Stockmann card discount, which made the stay very affordable.

The hotel was quite full, which was evident in the spa section. To begin with it is fairly small "spa": one pool with a few twists, a small warm water pool (4 persons), one whirlpool (6 persons) and a cold water pool (1 person). There were a lot of people so one had to wait quite a bit to get into the whirlpool or warm water pool. The water in the normal pool was quite cold. The restaurant by the pool side was pretty bad and expensive, so I would recommend to avoid it if possible.

The rooms in the hotel are pretty standard what you would expect to find in a hotel built in 70's or early 80's. Very dull & neutral, waiting to be replaced... The bed as well as shower were however quite good.

The restaurant, which doesn't have an entry of its own was a major positive surprise. We had the Easter dinner menu included in the room price so we went for that one. The food was well prepared and with some ambition considering that it's really big and located in a spa hotel. Also the wine list was pretty good and the wine recommendations worked extremely well with the food. The restaurant is the Haikko manor building and is spectacular. I would give the restaurant 4 stars as a stand alone.

The breakfast was served in the same restaurant, but was very crowded. Pretty standard Nordic hotel breakfast, so no surprises here.

Overall it was pretty good experience. The location is close to Helsinki, the food was good and the hotel was clean. The rooms and the spa are however below average.

Room Tip: Some rooms come with nice sea view, so I would ask for one of those.

I've spend a week there for business purpose.
Beautiful place, great spa facilities, good food, calm nights.
Rooms are pretty outdated, and the hotel itself 7km away from Porvoo. These are only minuses, but I guess if you are looking for a place to get some rest - this should fit perfectly.
I personally would like to get more variety at breackfast and cheaper pricet at local restaurant and bar - there it is a robery and nearest option is in Porvoo only.

Room Tip: take a lake view
