“Historical gem of a hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 18, 2012

The most charming hotel directly in front of the cathedral. The part in front of the door is all being done up right now but that doesn't matter cause once you enter, the hotel has its real old world charm. The floors are all warped, the hotel is so old! Breakfast in the dining room is more than you could want and I am not just talking about the food! If you are tall, you could knock you head on the stairs in a couple of places. I would happily go back to stay at this hotel.

Ribe is a sweet gem and this hotel is as well. Very old-- boasts of being the oldest hotel and town in Denmark. Cobblestone streets, incredible cathedral, and quaint beyond quaint. My 8 year old son and I both agreed that the beds were the most comfortable of our trip. The floor of our room sloped, and the bathroom left a bit to be desired, but it was such a delightful hotel with the perfect location in this out of the way town. I can't help give it an excellent rating. I hope to go back again some day. Caution: Be sure to get to this hotel and town by early evening. My son and I got lost coming from Holland and didn't get in until 1 am. My cell couldn't reach the "night number", but fortunately we chased down a Danish police car who just happened to be making their rounds right then (our prayers answered!). They called for us, got us in, and even carried our bags to our room. They were absolutely wonderful. Our heroes!

We had a wonderful stay here. Great location, directly across from the cathedral & the night watchman starts his tour right out front[ not to be missed ]. This historic hotel dates to the 16th century so if you want modernity, elevator etc this may not be for you but the uneven floors, all the dark wood, the attentiveness of the staff is terrific. The formal restaurant is WONDERFUL, one of the better restaurants we have enjoyed in our European travels & the bar at the lower[substreet level] is fun. You can take a late afternoon drink and/or pastry in the courtyard overlooking the cathedral. I would definitely stay here & visit Ribe again.

If you want to feel the wings of history, book Hotel Dagmar. You are a stone throw away from the Cathedral, where the quarterly chimes add to the history. Ribe is the oldest town in Denmark, and the hotel is named after queen Dagmar (1212). You are in the center of the old town with its narrow coupled stone streets. The hotel is as everything - old. You'll not find modern ammenties, but instead charm and hospitality. The kitchen is recommendable.
Around Ribe you'll find the marshes protected from the North Sea by a range of dykes - storm floods are well known here. In the summer you can go to the islands of Roemoe and Fanoe to enjoy the nature, the beach and of cause the sea. In the autumn (mid. September to mid. October) you can enjoy the "Black Sun" - an incredible show of thousands upon thousands of Starlings flying in formation creating wonderful figures.

Room Tip: Ask for room nr. 200 or similar.

This charming old hotel is not everyone's cup of tea. Ribe is a small town with charm, but it is not on the beaten track. We enjoy these out-of-the-way places and seek them out, feeling that we get a better sense of the locale here than at a chain motel on the main highway. The rooms are typically small, but they are very clean and reek of old-world charm. I would not stay here with little kids probably not even teenagers, and I would not stay here if I had any problems climbing very, very steep and narrow stairs. It's the kind of place where they lock the doors are eleven, so you better make arrangements if planning a late night. Well, there is almost no nightlife in this medieval town, so maybe that's not an issue. The attached restaurant is very good, but the service is very slow.

This hotel is a very old historic structure, lovingly maintained. It is in the heart of Denmark's oldest town and the perfect location for sightseeing and enjoying Ribe. My single room was small but comfortable and pleasant. The on-site restaurant provided one of the best meals I enjoyed during a month in Europe. The downside: The Dagmar is very seriously overpriced, even for its fine qualities. I was actually warned by two locals in separate conversations that this was the case; I was seduced by the lovely location and appearance. Afterwards, I felt like I'd left far too much money behind, in both the hotel and the restaurant. Way out of line.
