Den Gamle Kobmandsgard
Ranked #1 of 43 Ribe B&B and Inns

A couple blocks away from the center of town, this B&B was a pleasant place to stay for our two nights in Ribe. The owners/operators were quite friendly and welcoming the few times we encountered them, and I got the sense they mainly arrive at the property only to meet guests who are checking in and to arrange the breakfast tables in the morning. It’s a very low-key kind of place, which we liked.

When we made our reservations, we opted for the cheapest room, which did not have an en suite bathroom; instead, the private bathroom was located down the hallway. That wasn't a major inconvenience, though it was definitely awkward since you had to walk through the breakfast area in order to get to the bathroom in the morning. The room itself was comfortable if not memorable, and the breakfast was simple and spartan. Coffee drinks were available from a machine in the breakfast area, and the breakfast consisted of a plate of cheese and cold cuts, some bread with butter and fruit spreads, and orange juice. Overall, this was a convenient and comfortable place to stay; while it doesn't offer a huge amount of amenities, it was a great value, especially compared to some of the other lodging options in Ribe we researched, and it served as a perfect base for exploring this lovely little town.

Ribe is exquisite. It was totally worth the effort to get there. And we were rewarded by experiencing this beautiful B&B and its welcoming owners.
Location: Right in the middle of the ancient centre of this oldest town in Denmark and only a very short walk to the fascinating church in the heart of the town. Easy to find (had a GPS!) and free parking available on the street just outside the building.

House: Fantastically restored outside and restructured inside. There are three very large and light-filled bedrooms with a sitting area, comfortable chairs and a large TV set. Good WiFi connection throughout.
We were two couples and we took the bedrooms with an en-suite bathroom. There is one other bedroom which has its own private bathroom outside the room. All the rooms are elegantly furnished and the beds are large and comfortable. Our bedroom had the old mill wheel suspended above the bed - looked fantastic! Bathrooms are spotless and bright.
There is a communal dining area where an excellent and satisfying Scandinavian breakfast is served. A tea/coffee/chocolate machine is there for the guests' use and there is also a fridge, dishwasher, cutlery and crockery available if you want to prepare a snack.
Welcome: We were warmly met and greeted by our hostess who made us feel very at home. All the arrangements were completed efficiently and promptly. They only ask that you let them know, by prior arrangement, sms or phone, at what time you will arrive so that they can be at the property to meet you as they live elsewhere.

We absolutely recommend this B&B as a great place to stay if you are lucky enough to go to Ribe!

Occasionally, on holidays, you live for a short time in a town or village and wish you could stay (almost) indefinitely. Towns like Ribe. Ancient houses, crooked streets, friendly people, beauty and vibrancy everywhere: a town that has been lived in for so long. Spending a few nights in Den Gamle Købmandsgård gave us the luxury of living close to the centre of Denmark’s oldest town, surrounded by history, in quintessentially traditional accommodation; while enjoying plenty of space, modern amenities (including a coffee-and-hot-chocolate dispenser), a comfortable bed, rooms decorated in contemporary Danish style, and a generous and delicious breakfast. Perfect!
