“Disappointing”
Reviewed April 25, 2013

The room was dark and airless and the furniture was falling apart. The synthetic sheets didn't fit the bed. Bad value for money when compared with others for the same price. Dinner was expensive but the glasses of wine were big.

We stayed in a two story jungle bungalow with a view of the hotel grounds. Great atmosphere and a loveable rustic feel. Not all the lights worked in our cabin but actually just made it feel more like a little cabin at the lake. It was very quiet and while it got cold at night, the beds already were made with two thick wool blankets. Bathroom was clean and the shower got hot with a little patience. We ate dinner in the restaurant. Their pizza is great but the carrot soup tasted just like carrots and cream and was a little simple. Breakfast is not included and the WiFi did not reach our room but it was available in the restaurant.

San Marcos is always a nice place to stay and I have spent many happy nights here. The Paco Real and its owners are very caring folks doing their best. I love the great croissants (fresh every morning), good coffee. The pizzas were excellent. My daughter did not like the tuna special but we both loved the salads. The rooms are a bargain. I wish Alain, his family all the best and congratulations! You are doing a good job and you made us feel like family.

Room Tip: Our room had a sink and toilet. We shared the shower in the downstairs facility. An outdoor lamp s...

We stayed for 5 nights and on the whole had an enjoyable stay, however there are a few things that could be improved here. Firstly the room was not cleaned once during our stay (or even the bins emptied!), even after we requested it cleaned prior to our final night stay. The food in the restaurant was very good with the exception of the final night when service wasn't very good (eg. long delay between our food being served, plates not cleared), the staff were not very understanding when we therefore refused to pay the service charge saying that "no it's not optional"!! I resented having to pay for drinking water refills, as for the price we paid I would expect this to be included for the hotel guests. Hotel WIFI Internet is quite slow. Pros - nice bright room, nice gardens, friendly owners, great chocolate mousse. With some improvements could be great.

Hotel Paco Real is located right on the main path from the boat dock. Despite this central location, it maintains a peaceful ambiance due to it's expansive grounds, mature trees, and building layout. The family who owns and runs Paco Real, a Swiss / Mexican couple and their sons, keep it very clean, in good repair, and are wonderful hosts. This is one of the top places to stay in San Marcos.

+'s:

~ A lovely setting, grounds, and ambiance
~ A variety of rooms and buildings to choose from, each with their own personalities
~ Modest prices
~ Wifi
~ An authentic Maya sauna, pizza oven, and fireplace in their restaurant.
~ Really nice hosts - get to know them a bit and you will have new friends.
~ Located right on the main path up from the boat dock - easy to get around and connect with people from here.

-'s:

~ Working on getting their web site up and available for reservations and more information.

Special Treat:

~ Due to their location at the junction of two main paths, you can connect with friends and acquaintances as they walk by if you sit in the outdoor patio.

Room Tip: Each building and room has its own personality. Check out several, if they are available, so that yo...

Good place for a couple day break from the hustle and noise of San Pedro. The rooms are ok for the price with the bonus of having nice sized tables, hooks on the walls, and shelves around the walls. Our bed sheets were less-than-desirably worn though with sizable holes and we did not have a toilet seat in our private bath. We liked that the grounds have lots of tables and chairs scattered about for lounging and socializing. And the language school that uses Paco Real's huts provided easy access to spanish lessons, as well as a fairly routine influx of people to socialize with. Could be a very nice, cost effective place if the new management freshens the place up for a bit.

Room Tip: Each room that we and our friends had seemed pretty nice with there own charm but each also seemed t...

I stayed here in a 6-bed dorm, but one of the night's it was just me on the upstairs floor and the place was so nice that it was more like a very posh hostal (it would have been like a hotel, if it wasn't for the extremely irritating, loud and inconsiderate American couple downstairs, who were shouting 'Omg Jesus etc.' because they found some spiders in their room).

It was really nicely decorated and clean. Well-furnished as well, I had so much space to spread my stuff out on the shelves and floor and windowsills, not to mention the storage rack thing against the wall. And I loved that there were plugs right above the beds. There was even a kitchen downstairs (didn't use as I wasn't doing self-catered). the grounds of the hostal were lovely; they were rambling and jungle-like. the view of the tree-covered mountains through the window as you woke up in the morning were fantastic. The prices of the dorm was phenomenal- $5USD including breakfast, which was always amazing!! The restaurant part was also brilliant; lovely seating and ambience. the English owner I really liked- Paul. Some of the staff were sort of rude, but Paul was great.

I was only going to stay one night but ended up staying 2, because I was so impressed. It also helped that the girl who stayed in the bed next to me on my second night was brilliant!!
I would thoroughly recommend this hostal, both as a hotel and as a restaurant. I did have the 'pink pizza' though, which I wouldn't recommend because I don't feel it was value for money. It cost around $10 but was just 'nice', nothing special. For out of this world pizzas check out the owner's other restaurant, Le Fe, just around the corner- there was a pizza worth the $10!! Otherwise though, the breakfast food was very, very good and definitely value for money (included in the room price).
