Like an earlier reviewer, I made an extended stay of almost three weeks at the Hotel Zima. I had lived in San Isidro and the surrounding area more than forty years ago and wanted to get a feel for the bustling city it has become. Especially considering that I did not have a car, the location was perfect for me. It is a block and a half off the Interamerican Highway in a quiet area (which is hard to find in modern San Isidro) yet just a few minutes of walking put me in the center of town.

The rooms are kept very clean, the TV has many channels, including the three main US network affiliates in Miami, the WiFi signal is strong throughout the property, and Santiago and his staff can’t do enough to make your stay enjoyable. I stayed in a room with fan only, but as it got warmer in the afternoon, the pool was a nice place to cool off.

The excellent service and the fact that it has a mostly-business clientele mean that the Zima has a lot of returning or regular guests. I was not there on business, but I hope also to be a returning guest on my next trip to Costa Rica.

Clean, simple, and secure compound; reasonably priced and the BEST BEDS (and therefore the best night's sleep) we had in more than 5 weeks (1,000 miles) in Costa Rica. The attendants were helpful with our requests and even for a rather unsual situation. We will be making reservations here for our next trip. nmd

Room Tip: We ask of all the rooms were equiped with the same beds and told that they were.

I stayed here for two weeks - a strange thing to do in a non-tourist town like San Isidro - but as I was ill I needed some down time. This hotel has very nice, clean, quiet rooms in a very secure compound off the highway across from the main part of town. The location makes it quiet as it is away from the main part of the city center (and the endlessly tolling church bells) but is also a very easy and safe walk to all the things you need, including mercados, bars, restaurants, and laundry.

The compound is set up very nice with all the rooms and their entrances facing inward from the outer perimeter of the compound. There is a small but very nice pool in the center and nice accompaniments such as foliage and lounge chairs. A small, but very excellent, restaurant is open for three meals a day, and coffee is available at all times. They have a pool table, two computers with internet (though they are a bit old), and very fast and reliable internet in all the rooms.

They have a variety of rooms with different prices, based on size and whether or not you have air conditioning or a fan. The beds and sheets are very nice and are changed each day. There is hot water through the typical Costa Rican electric heaters.

I paid 42,000 CR colones for a large room with double bed, TV, and A/C. There are cheaper rooms with fan-only.

The staff was excellent with a few speaking english. They all learned my name and were very friendly, and happy to see me when I came back three weeks later after climbing Chirripo. The let me use their phone to set up a shuttle, and helped with the spanish interpretation when the person on the line didn't understand me.

Most of the other people staying there seemed to be Ticos; either families or people on business travel. The atmosphere was always very chill and friendly.

If you get "stuck" in San Isidro (as it says in Lonely Planet) this is a good place to stay and relax. If you're in transit between San Jose and the coast, or moving off to climb Chirripo as I was, take a day to chill here and benefit from all the amenities in San Isidro (including the many supermarkets).

Room Tip: Call or email in advance. They seem surprisingly busy, with groups of Ticos taking up banks of rooms.

We were here only for a short night but the overall stay was good, altough a little expensive for just a simple 1-night stay.
