We absolutely loved the Rock River Lodge and can't say enough about it. We stayed in one of the bungalows rather than the lodge and enjoyed the privacy and unobstructed spectacular views of Lake Arenal. The lodge is built on a hillside and so you can see almost the entire lake and even the volcano when it's not cloudy. One side of the community dining room is open-air with a garden and the same view of the lake so you can see forever while eating your fresh pineapple and papaya and (yummy) banana pancakes. Dinners are good too ($15 each) with seafood, beef or chicken. There's even couches around a stone fireplace at one end where you can visit with other guests or read a book. The place advertises lots of tours but we didn't see alot of activity. However, the Eco Lodge is very close and we drove there and signed up for a canopy tour on our own. The biggest downside to this place is getting there. It's very isolated and the last 12 KM or so from the Arenal Volcano are on a dirt road riddled with potholes so large you MUST have an SUV, a sense of humor, good car maneuvering skills, and not mind being bounced around. We stayed there on our way to Monteverde. To us, it was well worth it and we would love to go back.
