We absolutely loved the Rock River Lodge and can't say enough about it. We stayed in one of the bungalows rather than the lodge and enjoyed the privacy and unobstructed spectacular views of Lake Arenal. The lodge is built on a hillside and so you can see almost the entire lake and even the volcano when it's not cloudy. One side of the community dining room is open-air with a garden and the same view of the lake so you can see forever while eating your fresh pineapple and papaya and (yummy) banana pancakes. Dinners are good too ($15 each) with seafood, beef or chicken. There's even couches around a stone fireplace at one end where you can visit with other guests or read a book. The place advertises lots of tours but we didn't see alot of activity. However, the Eco Lodge is very close and we drove there and signed up for a canopy tour on our own. The biggest downside to this place is getting there. It's very isolated and the last 12 KM or so from the Arenal Volcano are on a dirt road riddled with potholes so large you MUST have an SUV, a sense of humor, good car maneuvering skills, and not mind being bounced around. We stayed there on our way to Monteverde. To us, it was well worth it and we would love to go back.

We arrived late at night around 10:30 PM without a reservation. The staff was just about to leave for the evening. We luckily got a room. The bar was closed but the bartender was happy to give us some Corona's and lime to take to our room. The lodge has a great rustic feel to it. The rooms are rustic, but clean. The only down fall our that the mattresses are hard. We discovered this was the case with most hotels in Costa Rica. The morning we woke up and went to the restaurant where breakfast is included in the room rate. The breakfast is very good. We loved the bananna pancakes. The view overlooking the lake is like being transported to a travel magazine photograph. The staff was very helpful. They showed us where the Volcano was, and they were very friendly. It is a great place to stay on your way to the Volcano. It takes about 1.5 hours from Liberia Airport. We drove at night and the road is very rough, filled with potholes. Be Careful if you are driving at night. A few cars were on the side of the road changing their tires. We would definitely stay here again.
