“JUST FINE”
Reviewed February 21, 2014

There are dozens of restaurants that fit the mold out of which came Embers in Kathmandu. An old house, a yard converted to an enclosed garden, a hip new wing with well-dressed tables and a bar. Shazam! Family house becomes restaurant.

Some months ago, my wife and I watched an old house transform into Embers, hip new Krishna Galli restaurant. Embers even sports a few designer stores in front to complete the image.

On a recent Saturday, our grocery shopping finished, we headed to Embers for lunch. This was not our first time at the spot and we headed directly for the new wing and its enclosed dining room to escape a late winter rainstorm. The folk that put Embers together followed the model faithfully. The new wing is stylish with floor to ceiling windows with bar at one end, the courtyard surrounded by fountain, the bar a classic Newari design and the house a warren of private rooms with show kitchen open to the courtyard.

After a quick glance at the menu, we ordered an Embers salad and chicken burger. The menu has a familiar mix of western and nepali main dishes and snacks. As we sipped our three for the price of two Carlsbergs, we watched a waiter collect cushions from the courtyard chairs. Two other couples sipped wine and nibbled on snacks. It’s unusual to see a lot of business at local eateries early on a Saturday afternoon, but Embers was doing just fine.

Our salad arrived first and we dug in. Crisp greens, sun dried tomatoes and boiled eggs made for a welcome start to our lunch. The outdoor bar was decorated for a party as it had been on several of our previous trips to Embers. Unlike many Kathmandu restaurants that turn into catering venues on a moments’ notice, Embers seems to have figured out how to keep the two lines of work separate. Our salad finished and the plate cleared, the chicken burger landed. Multigrain bun, crispy lettuce and previously frozen fries filled the plate.

All in all, Embers is a pleasant place to grab a drink, snack or dinner. It fits its category well and is just fine.
