The rooms are fairly nice, but the management leaves a lot to be desired. They close the main gate in the evenings -- I would think guests might want to go out for dinner. Just a night watchman remains in the evenings (I don't mean middle of the night, after 8PM, I believe), who really is not qualified for customer service. I had planned to stay the night, but unexpectedly had to leave around 8:30PM due to an emergency. There was no one to process my payment. The night watchman had no idea how to operate the credit card reader. He called an Assistant Manager, who told me on the phone that I would not be allowed to leave the premises. Seriously? Is that even legal? After a few more calls, finally some other staff agreed that I could leave to go to an ATM and get cash, so I could return immediately and make payment, which I did. Utterly ridiculous! First, you should have someone on stand-by if you're running a bed and breakfast, and second, since check-out time is not until the next morning, why would you insist that a guest make payment immediately? Third, if they've come to the reception on their own accord to make early payment, do you really think they are going to run off without paying? And last, how in the world can you detain a guest just because you don't have appropriate staff present at your guesthouse. I would give this place a pass.

The hotel is better appointed than expected for a budget hotel. The location is away from the crazyness of Kathmandu, a litlle of the Patan downtown. But not too hard to get too. The breackfast is very good (included). The staff extremely friendly and helpfull. I would go back just for this reason alone.

Room Tip: No elevator, but th eupper rooms have better views of the valley.

This lovely bed and breakfast takes all customer service awards! The staff is unfailingly helpful including negotiating with a taxi driver who could not be persuaded to drive us a distance he deemed "too short" (our language skills failed us). The rooms are clean, breakfasts (served on a covered patio) are tasty and varied even for a multiple day stay. The in-house laundry service is careful and speedy (line drying, so some advance time is needed). The area is a bit tough for taxi drivers to find - key words include the nearby "nursing campus" help and Nepalis do not consider this to be Patan. Instead, The Yellow House is in Sanepa on the edge of Jhamsikhel. Several embassies and NGOs in the area means there are very good restaurants to walk to - El Mediterraneo and Ghangri (open chicken momos) are divine. Yellow House is set in a peaceful garden and coffee and snacks are available on the porch until mid afternoon. While roosters and a few barking dogs may still awaken you, this location is much quieter than Thamel and other further in neighborhoods. 450 rupees to airport, 300-350 rupees to Thamel. Oh, and in June the air conditioning felt quite refreshing.

Amazing attention to detail, wonderful food, great service, very clean design and tons of hot water! The new chef designed menu is great. Nepali with a British twist. There is always something creative and artsy going on around here. The staff is connected to the real Nepal experience and glad to help.

Despite the hard beds, I would still stay here again and recommend this place. Staff are so nice, place is clean and shower had plenty of hot water.

After staying in thamal when I initially arrived in Kathmandu, I was eager to stay in a quieter area of town after I returned from Pokhara.

The hotel is difficult for cab drivers to find. Once we were taken to the yellow house in Thamel and another two times the cab drivers were confused on where to go despite being given the address and shown a map (the cab driver ended up calling the hotel to get us there). On the second day, we had one of the staff write directions in Nepali on how to get to the hotel and we had no further issues getting back to the hotel.

The rooms are beautifully decorated, very clean and the hotel has hot water 24 hours a day even during power cuts.

Breakfast was included and was great, lots of choices and high quality. I often had tea, croissants and fresh fruit and my husband would have crepes and coffee.

Staff goes out of their way to help you and are all so pleasant.

The one downside was that the beds were the hardest beds we slept on during our 2 weeks in Nepal. I felt like I was sleeping on a board. There were some comforters in the closet and I laid those down under the sheets to get a slightly more comfortable nights sleep.

The Yellow House (not to be confused with the hostel of the same name near Thamel) is in a quite location in Patan. Walking distance to some great restaurants (Thakhola Thakali, The Roadhouse, Tamarind, all about 10 minutes), The Yellow House is a great place to stay. The rooms are spotless, the staff are responsive and always smiling, and the showers are hot (which is great in the winter!). Off a major road, the hotel is much quieter at night than most places, and the dogs don't bark too close! They serve breakfast, but not really dinner - The Yellow House is owned by the same people who own Bakery Cafe, so if you order dinner (usually just simple or easy things like moms), they deliver it from Bakery Cafe. Also has fast wifi and a beautiful garden.
