I guess we started off on the wrong foot. Our white, American friends got a room easily at the off-season price listed on-line. (Rooms are typically around $120 a night, but for off-season they're around $75.) Looking for some respite for a night we walked into the lobby and my Nepali-looking (Puerto Rican) husband tried to get a room and they told him it would be $120. When he said that was too much they rushed to get the manager. Only when the manager heard his crisp, American accent were we offered the actual price of $75. The room was very nice (you have to pay an additional fee for internet) but the bed was so comfy and the showers were clean and warm. The atmosphere in the dining room is strange because the head waiters are like strict dictators and the other waiters run around trying to do everything as best they can. They have a doorman who is sharply dressed and polite and will fetch you a taxi cab that will charge you a hotel fee to take you anywhere. We just walked to the entrance and hailed our own cab and saved the extra couple of bucks. We'd stay there again, it was just very strange at times.

Room Tip: Even with a Do Not Disturb sign we had room service come on in. But without the Do Not Disturb sign...

In himalaya hotel we stayed for 3 nights. It was not a continous stay, but only as a stay to catch our flight conviniently. 1 night to do a local sightseeing. It is a very good hotel, Service is also good. First night we requested them to give us the rooms on the ground floor since we had our parents with us, but we were wrong and that we realised on our 2nd visit. the 1st floor & 2nd floor were much better. Getting a beautiful view of the mountains, & the swimming pool below. Overall the stay was very good for a family stay only for one day since they do not have any activities to do for the children, except swimming pool. The market area is also not so close from this hotel. It is in the old city of kathmandu. There is only one shopping mall Bhat Bateni close by on a walking distance of say 10 mins.

Room Tip: 2011 on the 1st floor

This hotel is located close to little shops, not the posh ones..... the door card did not open the door, we had to get the cleaners to help us open the door and no one came to sort it even when we informed the front desk. All but one gentleman at the reception was unfriendly and hopelessly aloof and cold. We requested for mineral water bottles but they told us to buy them if we wanted..... that was so unbecoming and thoughtless for a hotel to do. Even the smallest hotel usually provide mineral water bottle to especially foreigners. They did not provide any indoor footwear either. For the tariff we had to pay for the hotel stay we were totally dissatisfied. From the bell boys to the maids were expecting for tips almost for everything although we found a written document that said that the staff will not expect for any tips for their duties. The only place that did not dissatisfy us was at the cafe / restaurant...... they had a good spread for their breakfast and their staff at the cafe / restaurant was pleasant and helpful.

The list of things that went wrong at this over priced hotel was legion.

Air conditioning - broken (we called repeatedly - dudes came and looked, and left. Repeat.)
Refrigerator in room - hot (see above - called repeatedly)
Construction work day and night - NOT restful
Waiters in restaurant were rude and presumptuous - actually made a member of my family cry.
Really - that bad.
Messages left for us from friends - Not delivered - causing us to miss planned outings with
friends.

There are so many good and reasonably priced places to stay in this wonderful city - there is NO REASON to choose this disaster, and pay too much.

Room Tip: Don't use this hotel!

I checked into hotel HImalaya for a training workshop few days ago. In fact I am still here in the hotel. After a day of check -in my stomach got into trouble. I checked with other guys and most of them had the same story. Our tutors had tough time as well. Guess these guys at the hotel got to be little hygienic. Room service was all that i liked.
BE VERY Careful fellas!

Room Tip: Rooms near the lift are very noisy. So ask for the rooms away from this noisy lift.

This hotel is rated as a four star but misses basic requisites. Aside from the rooms, which have been renovated and are comfortable (although furniture already looks worn out and I had only cold water 2 days out of 6), hotel grounds look shabby and uninviting. The restaurant is dirty and unappealing, with waiters that do not pay any attention to guests. There is a garden but the lawn is patchy and unkempt. Internet connection is poor with frequent interruptions, and yet one has to pay for it at the rate of 10 USD per day. And it is very noisy. Definitely to avoid.
