I've stayed at the Summit Hotel a minimum of four times, and visited it often when I was living in Kathmandu as it was in the area. What's not mentioned in other reviews here is that the Summit Hotel also has a guesthouse level of accommodation, with rooms with a shared bathroom, in a guesthouse attached to the main hotel. You can usually negotiate a rate of about $20USD to stay there. The rooms, and bathrooms are clean, and still served with the same care as other rooms, with turn down service and hot water bottles at night! You still have access to all the hotel facilities, including the swimming pool, lovely gardens, views the city and Himalayas, and open fire in winter!

The only down side would be that it is not in the heart of Thamel, but this also makes it more of a retreat. Its a short taxi ride to Thamel, or a lovely extended walk through back streets to Freak Street, Durbar Square and Thamel. Patan is also not far from the Summit.

Not far from the Hotel is a restaurant of amazing value- The Down Town, which has a menu pages and pages long, with cheap and tasty food from every ethnicity! Ask the staff and they can direct you. Along the same road there are also a few other restaurants, though usually food at the Summit is excellent too.

I stayed there two times, once for work, the other time before/after a trek. I enjoyed it very much both times. The place is in a quiet area (Patan), close to the center of Kathmandu by Taxi. Patan also has nice places to visit, eat,... so it is very convenient. The hotel is located near embassies, some UN agencies,...
The garden is lovely, with a swimming pool. There is a small business center, a good restaurant, bar, and open fire in winter.

Excellent garden providing an oasis of peace in busy Kathmandu. Nice pool overlooking traditionally built garden wing. Buffet breakfast is generous and with corteous staff. In may, beautiful Jakaranda trees flower. Far away from restaurants but walking distance from Patan - what you need in Kathmandu
