“Pleasant oasis”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

Initially I had some hesitations to book this hotel because it is situated at some distance from Thamel, Durbar square and other main attractive sites in Kathmandu. It is located in Patan, about where Kathmandu and Patan meet, beautifully located on a hill. I stayed in the hotel in a Garden Wing room for two short periods and really enjoyed it, particularly because it is so quiet and peaceful. However, the room offered no particular luxury but was clean and overall OK. There is a beautiful garden and a medium-sized, unheated pool. The view on Kathmandu and the surrounding Himalayan range from the hotel terraces is beautiful but this requires bright, clear weather and this is often not the case. It takes about a 15 to 20 minutes taxi drive to get to Thamel, depending on the time of the day. Taxis are usually waiting in front of the hotel. The restaurant and the bar are excellent. Breakfast was great. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and helpful. I had the privilege to visit the hotel during the Tihar festival, the festival of lights. Everywhere in the garden and along the balconies small lights were placed, creating a truly fairytale atmosphere. I consider this hotel a great choice when visiting Kathmandu.

It's a very popular hotel. When I stayed, it was out of the tourist season, but the place was still buzzing with foreigners. The building is charming. I don't know when it was built, perhaps not so old, but undoubtedly and distincitvely in Newari style. The problem is that I stayed in the Garden View side, whose rooms are rather small and dark. I had to work in my room, so it was a little inconvenient. If I stayed there for the sightseeing purpose, the room wouldn't have been a problem at all! I was so impressed by the garden, displaying a wide rane of Himalaya plants and flowers. Also surpursing was cuckoo chirping -- in other countries you usually need to go to forests to hear it! The location is good too. Most taxi drivers know this place.

We used Summit as the base for a 10 day visit to Nepal and found it the perfect location tucked away from the hurly burly of the town and its noise but at the same time within easy walking distance of the Patan Durbar and main streets.

The staff were without exception pleasant and very helpful, the food good, and the grounds and views excellent. Unfortunately it was too hazy to see the mountains when we there.

The rooms are however very small for two people, though to be honest we spent little time in them.

We initially booked Summit on the advice of a colleague who makes frequent business visits to Nepal.

Room Tip: There are larger rooms for which we were given an upgrade on our last night, but be warned that thes...

I stayed at the Summit for three weeks. My room was rather basic and in need of renovation. Hot water was a challenge as it tended to disappear after five minutes. The room was very clean but the towels looked and felt like they had been washed a 1000 times. The staff were courteous and some went out of their way to be helpful. The substantial extra charge for Internet access was annoying and the hotel was not willing to charge for actual usage rather than a daily rate.

We spent the last week of the year at the Summit hotel, soaking in the wonderful Himalayan views from the lovely hotel garden, gathering for evening meals around the lovely fireplace, and overall being treated extremely well by the attentive and friendly hotel staff. Definitely a highlight of our time in Kathmandu.

I stayed her after a long trek. Flying into Kathmandu a month earlier I'd been very disappointed in the city: noisy, full of tourists, polluted, etc. When I returned from my trek the last thing I wanted was to descend back into that mess, so I paid more, took a chance with theh Summit, and didn't regret a minute.

The staff were unfailingly courteous, the area around the hotel was full of marvellous eating spots (including an organic restaurant 7 minutes away on foot) and spas, and the air was clean. I particularly enjoyed sitting on the terrace in the afternoons watching the mountains in the distance slowly disappear as night approached.

If a touch of class is what you're looking for, rather than cheap massage parlours, dozens of trekking and tourist shops, and chaotic vehicular traffic, you couldn't do better than the Summit.

Room Tip: Our second floor room, facing away from the central courtyard, was especially quiet.
