“An oasis amidst Nepali chaos”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

Kathmandu can be overwhelming to the senses, so we were glad to have this great Home to retreat to after a day out. Perfect location, tasteful decor and impeccable service. We just loved the breakfast served in our sunlit room each morning. The heater provided is fine for sleeping, but shower is not hot enough for winter nights. As part of our Nepali experience it's well worth the price.

In my 9 day in Kathmandu. Me and my friend travelled in and around the Kathmandu Valley and stayed one or two nights in different guest houses. Among the places we stayed, this Traditional Homes was the most superb of them all. Too bad we only got in for one night. The hotel manager, Sham, said we are actually lucky enough to get in because with only six rooms that they have, they are fully booked most of the time. The rooms are just wonderful. And the toilet is pretty cute.

My daughters and I spent a week here after one of them suffered a serious health problem. This is a great B&B! Shyam Tandukar and his staff went out of their way to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. The rooms were clean and smelled good (important to us). The food was fantastic and a welcome American style treat. The prices are very reasonable. We visited some of the higher end hotels and they had nothing on TH-S. We stayed in the attic room and really loved it! We will always be thankful for their hospitality.

Room Tip: The top floor is the best because it has an attached roof patio...but be prepared to climb some stee...

Charming, clean and tastefully equipped rooms, friendly staff, excellent location to explore Patan. We stayed during Tihar in a family room on top floor and enjoyed every minute. Breakfast had been described by an acquaintance as best in KTM, but we found it good, but not out of the ordinary. Entires premises have been renovated to keep much of the traditional flavour, but adding some modern amenities. We will certainly return.

Interesting small boutique hotel in Patan very close to Durban Square. Breakfast is good, and hotel is close to other restaurants and Durban Square. We stayed in the attic room which was nice with good views but no elevator (not a problem for us but you may want to reconsider this if stairs might be an issue.)

I stayed for a week on my own at the Swotha traditional home as I was attending a conference nearby in the historic Patan Durbar Square; out of all of the places across Katmandu the 140 delegates stayed this was definitely voted the best.

The traditional house has been beautifully converted ( it was a UNESCO conference on living urban heritage attended by heritage architects, archaeologists et al so I know what I am talking about) by Shyam who has a real eye for fusing traditional Nepali design with modern touches; each of the rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable with lots of hot water. I stayed in single room 3 and the attic room - this was fantastic and well worth the extra 30 dollars - and had a fantastic time.

The breakfast is good with lots of coffee and I didn't have to wait although I would say the kitchen is quite small and they often have groups. The evening meals are good and try the gnocchi which matched that served in umbria.

The staff are very helpful - I found a small kitten with a broken leg just outside the hotel and the staff took it to Animal Rescue Nepal and were going to have it at the hotel afterwards. They took it in turns to stroke it and to play with it so it could get some sun.

They arranged for taxis, gave information and were interested in what I and other guests were doing . I saw them unobtrusively playing with fractious babies to allow the parents a moment of peace.

re was a bit of noise in the early morning but no more than anywhere else in Katmandu.

I'd definitely go back.

Room Tip: Choose the attic room - more of a suite really with its own roof terrace it feels like being on top...

An old traditional Nepali home transformed into a charming boutique hotel. I love how they retained the original architecture of this building. Things I love about Traditional Homes - Swotha:

1) Traditional Nepali architecture
2) Good quality bathroom fixtures - lavatory, water closet and shower; hot water works perfectly
3) Located right beside an UNESCO World Heritage Site (Durbar Square, Patan)
4) Nice restaurant with a good range of Nepali food, pasta, salad and sandwiches
5) Excellent and friendly service - The general manager was very welcoming and helpful
6) Homey ambiance / Oasis of calm in busy Patan
7) Interesting reading material

Some drawbacks:
1) We can hear the noise in the streets (bell that rings at 5am to wake up the entire neighborhood, motorcycles)
2) Shower curtain is not firmly secured to the wall

I highly recommend this hotel for those who would like to experience the real Patan but still want to have a homey, comfortable place to stay at the end of the day.
